Judges 11:29-40 did he( Jephtah) kill his daughter,or did her forbid her to marry ? So she went into the mountains for two months with her girl friends to grieve . Impressive support system she had.

I've always understood it as him killing his daughter. The most important thing you have to remember while reading the book of Judges is that there are very few good examples in the book. Most of the things people do in Judges are not done the way God wants them to be done. This is a prime example. God was not pleased with Jephthah's sacrifice anymore than He was pleased with Samson for falling in love with and living with prostitutes.

It is my understanding that he did sacrifice her. That's why she was commemmorated afterwards by the young women. It is also always been my take that God was trying to teach him a lesson. You shall not take the name of the Lord God in vain, for he will not hold you guiltless. Jeptah swore to God that he would sacrifice the first thing that came out of his house. God could have made sure it was a lamb or something, just as he provided the ram to Abraham. But instead it was Jeptah's daughter. I can't honestly say whether God was trying to test Jeptah and see if he would keep his vow, or if he was punishing him for making an oath in regard to such a selfish request. Either way, I do believe that divine providence dictated who came out that door. Those are my thoughts.

Thank you for introducing this subject, it reminded my of some thoughts I had some while ago on this passage of Scripture Here we have, "female", type of Christ. Firstly she is a firstborn, secondly she is a virgin, (a sign of purity, and holy ness), thirdly the expression, "two months", appears, "three times", and three draws our attention to the, "Trinity", and, "two", speaks of the second person of the Trinity. This young girl who's name is not revealed in the above passage is prepared to lay down her life in order to save her father from the consequences of breaking his vow to the LORD. Every blessing. Edwin.

I've heard it said that she remained a virgin and would have been considered dead; but that doesn't seem to go with the text to me. I think he did do it. However, what then do we make of the passage in Hebrews which counts Jephtah among the righteous? Hebrews 11: 32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: ... 39 And these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise: I take it to mean that we may err and even sin greatly but God looks at our motives. If God doesn't hold this against Jephthah, we shouldn't; and when we think we see sins in others, perhaps we should be careful before criticizing them. Maybe we think we are right, but it could be that they also think they are. Romans 8:33 Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth.
