The closest one closes at 6PM usually. There is one in the middle of the city that is open late, but that would take some extra work to get to. I am usually too tired to go to a different location than en route to heading home.

I can understand that one, especially when you have to rely on public transportation.

Yep and I do, but taking a car into the city is no picnic either though.[sm=hammerhead.gif]

Are libraries not open on a Saturday?

Mike, I'd suggest that you do some research. Find out who is doing the dvd and have a hunt for their credentials online. There are some really good dvds out there. There are also some bad ones. The problem with many exercises (not just stretching kind) is that you can do more harm than good if you're not sure what you're doing.

If you've never done this before, see if you can find one for beginners.

Hi Aga, the one in the middle of the city is open on Saturdays, but it still would take some work to get there. Not that is a bad thing, but I just like staying out of the city as much as possible. I will look into the DVD's for beginners as well.

LOL! That's true.

They are trying to make the city more bike friendly too, however I think that is going to be a tight squeeze battle if you know what I mean?

I'm not sure of the layout of Boston, but if it's anything like San Fran, *ugh!*

Like San Francisco, but even more compact/narrower and overbuilt!

That sounds worse than Chicago.......... which has got to be the worst city I've ever lived in.

humbleinspirit -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 8:45:04 PM)

Seriously Roberta? Now I could actually picture myself living in Chicago or any other major city west of here including San Francisco.

PinkCarnations -> Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 8:59:28 PM)

Oh yes. We lived in Chicago and Gurnee in the late '70s/early '80s. It was drug central back then. I went back through Chicago in late '92 when I was pg. w/my dd. We just spent the night in a motel there. Morning couldn't come fast enough to get me out of there. Since then I can't count how many times I've either driven through Chicago or been in the car with someone else driving. My blood pressure sky-rockets! I have no idea how many times I've been stranded at ORD. I had to spend the night there once too. I think my dd was 2 or 3 when that happened. Inside of ORD is pretty cool in the day time, but is a horrid place to spend the night, especially when you have a little one with you.

I'm sure the city is pretty to look at night, but in the day time, yuck! I've taken the L train a few times, and there's nothing but ugly buildings.

I'm so not a city girl!

humbleinspirit -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 9:03:23 PM)

OK Roberta, I do not blame you then. Chicago was the first ever trip that I planned from beginning to the end on my own. I bought a travel book and read up on the city, which places to go, where to stay, where to avoid, etc. All and all I found the city to be quite airy and have a very glamorous skyline as well.

I have had my share of hassles at O'hare also. Midway, while not being nearly as nice as O'hare is at least somewhat decent.

Mollymouser -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 9:15:41 PM)

I don't like Chicago.
I did like Boston, but I loved Rockport much better.
I lived in San Francisco from 1989-1992.

humbleinspirit -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 9:21:23 PM)

Now Harvie, did you like San Fran?

Rockport is a world away from Boston in lifestyle.

Mollymouser -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 10:25:28 PM)

I loved the San Francisco weather.
I hated that the City was so .... grey and grimy. I missed open spaces and sky and trees.
I hated all the crime, beggars, homeless people, and cross-dressers/drag queens everywhere.
I've always liked visiting San Francisco, but the day-to-day hassle of living there? Not so much.
And it was dreadfully expensive.
And earthquake prone.

Rockport is more my style.

humbleinspirit -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 10:28:46 PM)

Now I could actually live in Rockport myself if I could actually afford it and had a decent job that I could do also.

SF a daily hassle, etc? I guess that the grass really isn't greener on the other side. Chicago is quite open and spacey though.

Mollymouser -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 10:37:05 PM)

I think I'm just not a City Girl. [:)]

humbleinspirit -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 10:38:14 PM)

I know that I am not a "fast-paced/rushed" person, and Boston is way too fast! I could use some California culture, or even just Rockport culture instead.

Mollymouser -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 10:56:12 PM)

We're in California's central (San Joaquin) Valley; nice and slow paced. (But gosh-darn hot in the summer!)

magdaleine -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/7/2009 11:11:04 PM)

Mike, I'm sorry you had such a rough beginning to the week. I can just imagine how upset and nervous you were! I hope you find a better place to work. You've stuck with this job for a long time!

Roberta, I'm glad your daughter's friend was able to tell her what he was trying to do and that she was alert enough and comfortable enough to let you know so that you could get help for the boy.

I certainly don't have the cause for it that you have, but I can relate to not wanting to give up anger. I know I didn't respond at the time, but when I read Roberta's post about having difficulty with anger, I thought about how different we all are. Anger seems like a very "safe" emotion to me, and I am reluctant to let go of it. Perhaps because I'm worried that it is covering up an emotion that would make me feel more vulnerable. Could that be a factor for you, Maggie?
Thanks for the hug, Elizabeth. Could my anger be covering up another emotion? Very possible. Anger has been an emotion that's been hard for me to identify in myself. I'm quick to call it all sorts of other things. Certainly I was (and am) feeling hurt. Not sure what else. I hope you have a great time in Palm Springs!

Mike, I'm glad you biopsy came back negative. Very good news!

quote:

Whoops!! I meant to put this in the Brit vs Yanks thread, sorry! lol
LOL! I was wondering why you were putting it in this thread!

I might be doing a bit better tonight than last night, after talking with a couple of friends. I slept for 14 hours last night/today, however, and didn't want to get up. God's going to have to work whatever miracle that needs to be done in me because I simply can't see how to get where I need to be. I'm not sure I even see where I need to be, nevermind how to get there.

I'm loving my new phone, however. New toys are fun and I haven't had one for a while. Every day I'm finding new things that I like about it.

Bountiful -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/8/2009 12:44:58 AM)

Sorry you've had such a lousy week, Mike. Your boss sounds like a real jerk.

I know how stressful doing rushes constantly can be. No doubt your boss constantly yelling doesn't help.

I worked in law firms for a long time. Almost everything seems to be a rush. In my field there was a ton of paper produced and of course everything had to be copied. We usuallyh had to do our own photocopying as well. Of course that's when the machines jammed, broke down or people were constantly cutting in. And of course everybody involved on the file are standing around jumping up and down like little kids that have to go to the bathroom. Grrrrrr[:@]. I know how it goes!

Hope next week is a little better and that you'll hear something from the other places you've put your application in.

Roberta, I'm praying for your daughter's friend. I'm so glad she told you about it. That was a great move on her part.

Maggie, I think that's a good description of faith. It's a tough one though, isn't it? It's feels like walking around blindfolded. But that makes us walk with our arms out and our hands open. That's the kind of invitation that God loves. ((((Maggie))))

IwillseekHim -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/8/2009 6:35:43 AM)

I am definately not a city girl. I live in a rural area in southeast Georgia. We moved to a bigger town over a year ago and it took me months to muster up the courage to drive. When I finally did, I decided I would drive to a nearby island. Made it across the two large bridges(don't like them, either) and came up on the first intersection. Witnessed a head on collision right smack in front of me! I had to literally pull over and pull myself together.
Truly hoping all is well with everyone here.
Harvie, if you have any suggestions on how to live happily without your husband while he is away, please feel free to share. I am having a difficult time with this. The week seems to drag by and then when he is home for the weekend the time flies. He will leave out today and I am truly dreading the thought of it all. Thanks.

PinkCarnations -> Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/8/2009 9:17:18 AM)

Good morning everyone.

I had to call for my back-up person to help with the cooking today. I did get some of the house clean, but I have a long ways to go.

magdaleine -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/8/2009 9:35:45 AM)

Melissa w/o cat, that would have been really hard to see that collision on your first foray in the car. I hope you kept on driving (after you pulled yourself together) after that.

Roberta, I'm sorry you're not doing well.

Thanks for the hug and encouragement, Edith.

I slept 2 1/2 hours last night/this morning. I guess that balances out the 14 hours yesterday.

Roberta, I'm glad you have a back-up person. You were smart to plan ahead that way.

I recently bought a Blackberry. It's the same model as my work-issued Bberry, so I am fairly comfortable with it. I failed to ask permission from dh to buy it, so it's kind of a thorn in his side, he feels disrespected when he sees it. There's a bunch of OCD stuff (rituals) associated with buying electronics, for dh.

Ouch. I, too, hope you managed to keep driving after that incident.

I don't like San Francisco's weather, but I love the city. I think my fear of earthquakes would prevent me living there, though - and it's way too cold for dh. Chicago I've only seen once, and that was mostly the train station. Not impressed, but I didn't give the place a fair shake. NYC I love and would live there again in a minute. I've never lived more than an hour away from a major metropolis. I don't know how I would adjust to that.

Yesterday was a bunch of drama. The comedian who was supposed to perform at the Palm Springs private party ended up claiming his car had been damaged in an accident. He asked for a ride to PS with us, which dh was unable to allow for OCD reasons. We ended up renting him a car (for which he reimbursed us, at least). I'm hoping it gets back to the rental offices in one piece. His performance was not bad at all, but he was so unprofessional offstage that dh won't be able to hire him again. Also, we really didn't get to see much of Palm Springs b/c we spent a couple of hours detouring to where he lives, renting the car for him, etc. And we later pieced together from various things that he probably doesn't own a car at all. [&:] So, it was a frustrating day. Bad for dh's anxiety, and just tiring for me.

MyCatSmokey2006 -> RE: Mental Health Encouragement - One Stop Thread (11/8/2009 1:43:05 PM)

Well, I feel depressed today, even with the bright sunshine and warm temps. I'm disappointed in God that He didn't answer my prayer about something that happened last night. He did reassure me that He's always with me, even to the end of this age,, but I'm still concerned about how mentally healthy I'll be by the time that happens. I guess that I'll just trust in God and let Him ease the anxieties of my heart.
