Since I don't socialize with people much, my mom got me a dog. I think he is a Rotterman http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/r/rotterman.htm which is a cross between the Doberman Pinscher and the Rottweiler. He is a very friendly dog and he gets me out of the house everyday. I've only had him since last Friday, but we have already bonded very well. He does raise my stress levels and blood pressure at times. We work through it.

I lost one of my last friends this week, due to my depression. However, I am still going to a bible study with people on Friday evenings, so I am getting some socialization. I also made it to my 3 doc appointments last week including an SSI evaluation doctor.

The days are rough, very rough... trying to take one day at a time.

Limulus, I'm sorry to hear about your friend. I'm praying for you as you go through this difficult time.

I'm glad you got a dog. Pets are healthy for us, both physically and mentally. I have a cat named Smokey, he's in my avatar, who's my therapy kitty and very loving and playful. Smokey is my baby and I don't know what I'd do if I ever had to let him go.

I'm glad that there are animal lovers like us who care enough about their pets to give them the love and attention they need. I get upset when I see those TV animal police programs about people who've abused animals and cheer on the cops who nail the abusers. Sometimes I have to turn the channel though, because it get's too disturbing to watch.

Limulus, sorry to hear about your friend. The dog is a good thing though. They've (and cats too) actually been proven quite beneficial to those of us with mood disorders because they help with our moods and stress for reasons no one really understands beyond it works.

I had an interesting doctor appointment today. At the advice of my doc, my file has now been flagged. My spouse is ONLY allowed to talk to billing. See, I finally saw my new GP today, but I was supposed to see her in early August, then mid August and he cancelled both those appointments mostly because he just didn't want me to go. Yeah, that qualifies as yet another example of denying my medical care. They were also a bit unsettled to learn that when he finally let me go today he drove me but sat in the car in the parking lot - right outside the door into the building. They fear he may be a security risk just from that. So a lot of my appointment was spent making sure I knew where I could go for what if needed for domestic violence assistance. Oh, and there's something wrong with my knee too (the one I twisted about 10 days ago). So I have PT for that to see if it'll help then they'll do x-rays and perhaps send me to ortho. Blech.

Well, almost everyone in the house (including me) has a cold. Colds almost always make my panic attacks worse. I'm hoping that I can just sleep most of this one off - or at least get plenty of rest.

I agree about pets and am so thankful that my wonderful cat came into my life recently. He's awesome!

The state appointed psych appointment for the appeal is tomorrow at 2pm. I had forgotten about it until a little while ago. Not looking forward to it.

I'll be praying for you about that, everythingat. I'm not sure if they vary, but mine wasn't that bad. It was a bunch of questionnaires about symptoms, some questions to verify those answers and some tests to check stuff like cognitive and memory functions. The stress and worry were worse for me than the actual eval.

I go see my pdoc tomorrow. I wonder if I've lost any weight with all this walking I've had to do?

Roberta, look at how you feel physically from the walking. Do you feel better for it? How do your clothes fit? That's probably easier to judge than whether you've lost weight or not, which is so frequently muddled because we lose fat and gain muscle.

I've hurt my knee. I ruptured a Baker's cyst (I did start a thread about it in H&F) and it's stopped me doing much physically and the pain has had a bit of a knock on mentally. But I'm doing better now.

Is there anyone out there that can offer some wise words re: anxiety.

Sometimes I am feel so free in Christ, it is just wonderful. Other times, I struggle with laying my burdens down at the cross and just trusting Him. Maybe it will be a stressful week at work, or that I have to deal with some difficult people. Some stressful weeks, I just don't get my worries in check no matter how hard I pray or how much of the bible I read.

Then my stress will cause my heartbeat to worry me or I wear down my immune system and get sick. I think I stress out most when it comes to relationships. Do you think I have some sort of anxiety disorder?

I guess it may have to do with the fact that I've been through a lot of pain in my life, maybe I have fear issues. I think I stress out most when it comes to relationships. I would recommend contacting a therapist. I currently use Lutheran Family Services, but you don't have to be Lutheran to use the services. They also bill on a sliding scale.

I wonder how you're praying? I've found often that when I'm stressed, it helps me if I can get out for a walk in the fields where I live and as I pray, look around and see the beauty of God's creation. As for reading the Bible ~ what version do you use? It may help if you have one like the NAS or NLT or even a paraphrased Bible ~ not to study, just to read the way you'd read a novel. Our Bibles give us so much about how to live but it's hard to seek out that information when we're stressed, so sometimes turning off the pressure to find it is helpful.

And yes, you may want to seek some therapy for it. Doesn't have to be years and years of therapy, but you can learn a lot about dealing with stress in a short period of time.

Slimon11, I agree with everyone else. Getting a therapist would probably be a good idea.

Right now, I'm feeling pretty good. I'm believing that I'm filled with the Holy Spirit, since I've got a renewed desire for reading and studying God's Word and going to church. However, I'm also feeling jazzed up, like I'm in a hurry to get somewhere and I DON'T think it's the caffeine. I believe I'm filled with the Spirit, but at the same time, I'm wondering if I'm also having manic episodes, since I'm so happy now. What do you think?

I'd say that it's totally impossible for anyone online to say whether you are or aren't having a manic episode. Are you taking the meds you're supposed to be taking when you're supposed to be taking them? How are you sleeping?

From your posts, you sound pretty coherent though so it may not be a manic episode. You need to ask those you see from day-2-day ~ and if you feel that you are having an episode, get in touch with your doctor or your contact person so they can assess you.

Well, I'll admit, I've not been taking my meds on a regular schedule and I sleep in most mornings and go to bed late at night. I'm working on getting back on schedule though.

I would side with Agapetos about it being better to ask those around you. That said, how much sleep are you getting? That can help determine if you're heading for mania or hypomania. You might also look for other signs like extra projects, going shopping or whatever you do when manic.

Well my pdoc appt. went fairly well. I haven't lost any weight, but my clothes are looser and I feel good.

Unfortunately this afternoon I was hit by a small pick-up truck. No serious damage, but enough pain to keep me from doing any walking the next few days.

Melissa, I wouldn't attempt to determine if someone online was going through a manic episode or not either. Have you talked with your dr or with family members?

How did that happen? Did you call the police and go to hospital? What injuries do you have?

That would depend on who you talk to. Either you have some type of disorder or are not putting enough trust in God. (that was sarcism) Go see a doctor. And if you do think it is anxiety or something like that, see a psychiatrist rather than your GP for an inital diagnosis. You will get a more accurate diagnosis and the best meds for your condition if you need them.

I asked my Mom and she says that I'm just my usual happy self, not manicky at all. I was reading a book about bipolar disorder and found that I had some symptoms of it, but basically, I think that I've been on a spiritual high and full of the Holy Spirit and that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Spiritual highs are awesome. Enjoy it!

My third son is having several mental health problems. I wrote about it here: http://forums.crosswalk.com/fb.aspx?m=3810749 I'm not doing very well myself.

Even the most level-headed and stable person will find they have times in their life where they have symptoms of a mental health disorder such as bipolar. It doesn't mean that they are though.

Maggie, I'm sorry that you're not doing so good ~ I'm guessing much of that is concern for your son though? Know that you will both be in my prayers.

Thanks, Stovie. Ds3 was admitted to the Psych ward this evening. It was hard to leave him there but it seems like a nice place. His crisis doesn't help matters but I was sliding the several days before I knew there was something wrong with him. And I spoke to ds2 today. He's coming home from Germany tomorrow where he spent 6 weeks with his girlfriend. It sounds like they're breaking up. He too has mental health issues and I'm worried about what this will do to him. Fun and games. At least I get to see my own psychiatrist tomorrow.

Maggie, I will certainly be in prayer for you and your family. I know that had to be hard. How is your son doing?

(((hugs))))

I am doing fairly well, all things considered.

I had a recent experience that was "interesting." I went a few months ago to the pharmacy to get my meds. A few days later, I got a phone call from them that was a recording saying that I needed to come get my meds. I called them and explained that I had already picked up my meds. I didn't think anything else about it. A few weeks ago I went to see my pdoc. She called in my meds. When she called in my meds, the pharmacy said that I had never picked up my previous prescription. My pdoc was not happy with me at all! I tried to explain to her that I did pick them up, but she didn't believe me. She said that it was all computerized and so there couldn't be an error. I had to bring her in my newest prescription bottles before she'd call in any new prescriptions. Within 24 hours I brought her in my newest bottles and went to the pharmacy to pick up the prescriptions she had called in.
The other day I got a nice, hand written card from her in the mail apologizing for not believing me and (she knows I take the bus) four free bus passes for my inconvenience.

Thanks, Roberta. It is hard. My son seems to be doing well, considering he's on a psych ward. He's getting a pass for the weekend. We're moving him out of his apartment on Saturday to come home--at least until he is safe to be on his own again and can afford to live on his own (I paid the last several months' rent for him and gave him money for groceries). He wanted to have the two basement rooms but so many people told me that was not a good idea, that I told him he could only do that if his psychiatrist agreed. Today he asked him and the doctor said no basement. So he's stuck in his former bedroom which is quite tiny. I feel badly for him but I am SO relieved that I don't have to pack up all my stuff that's in those two rooms. It's been stressful enough packing up his apartment.

We will meet with the doctor on Tuesday to get a diagnosis and I guess to learn whatever else he has to tell us. What sorts of questions should we be asking him? Any thoughts? I wrote down one question this evening. Could the psychosis be the result of the meds he had started taking a month or two before this happened? I know so little about things like psychosis. I have to admit it's scary.

Roberta, that's awesome about your doctor apologizing and giving you bus passes to make up for it. Wow! Good for her! And good for you for standing up for the truth, instead of allowing her to cow you--something I might have done.
