And cheap doesn't necessarily mean in $$$. Most of the junk in stores is junk. A Manfrotto 3021BN is an excellent aluminum tripod for about $200-250. It can accommodate around 10 pounds of weight on the head. It's much better than some similarly priced tripods available in electronic/consumer good stores like Best Buy.

Something like the Markins Q3 is an ideal smaller ball head for excellent support (not for long lenses).

So someday, after we sell the house and I convince myself that I really do need to spend some money on a cannon rebel (after this week's shoots, I wish I had one now for the distance / low light shots) is this the tripod that would give me the best bang for my buck?

BTW, the head on my tripod is flat...what is a ball head?

BTW, the best tripod is a heavy and well built one. For information on why that is true...

http://www.bythom.com/support.htm

I understand, but I resent paying more for a tripod than I did for my camera!

I want something simple and yes, cheap, because my funds are finite.

Thank you all for your comments though

LOL. My tripod and head (including Wimberly Sidekick) cost less than the camera body I use (that is, camera without lenses).

You can always try sandbags. It's a popular alternative for stable support in certain situations.

We must take into account what we are snapping too.

Neil is snapping birdies in their natural habitat w/o their consent (did that birdie sign a release form? hehehe) and doing so from a great distance with quite a set up. Thus requiring a heavy duty *sweet* system. yeah, I am coveting... but I will come to my senses when I realize it is a nikon system and i don't wanna relearn what I already learned and so on and so forth.

Agape is snapping shots of actors on the set of Persuasion in bath as she walks around. (Yes, still green with envy) She is doing her work with a compact digital. The gorrillapod might be wonderful for what she likes to take photos of.

I am finding that some of what I want to snap requires a tripod. The whole reason behind the el cheap'o light weight one I bought was for the brookgreen gardens trip with my class. THIS SHOT would never of happened without it.

Details:

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi
Exposure: 0.067 sec (1/15)
Aperture: f/5
Focal Length: 80 mm

Hind sight 20/20 I wish I'd of done another shot with the aperture closed all the way down. but then I had a tripod BUT I did not have a Shutter release cord so......... Note to self right- Carry Shutter release cord for both Rebel and the K1000. I had NEITHER on that trip. It really Hoovered and a couple of my tripod shots were really Black and Deckered because of my lack of planning.

Next trip- I pack a Black sheet to drape behind the marble statuary in the one building with the nasty grey/blue walls. I also go out and find a better light tripod. The 20.00 one has about a 1/4" left/right play in the head. remember it is a 20.00 tripod. I think I got my 20.00 worth out of it. If I can find another one a bit better in the say 40.00 range that will fit in the bag I got with the 20.00 one it will be well worth what I paid for it. LOL Oh and I need to carry SUNBOCK too.

*hoovered = suck
**Black and deckered = messed up

This picture is not good photography by any means. . . but it is one of the most bizarre things you will ever see.

Caution. . . not for the real faint of heart. . . and animal lovers (but it's still alive, I promise you!)

What was that that Ezri said about birds and natural habitate? WOW!

Ezri, the shot of the statue, just begs to be messed with digitally. I do agree, it would have been more dramatic with a black background.

So you take Triss's photo, open it in Photoshop (or whatever), mask the statue and blur the background. Just like my avatar. That was originally a bunch of cut flowers in a vase.

Actually, it's more scenes like this that I was thinking of needing the tripod for. I'm not sure if there isn't a bit of camera shake on it. I know that it needs something, but I don't know what, I just love God's painting

Yeah, you definitely could have used a tripod there. I'll bet you got a "Slow Shutter Speed" warning from your camera.

You know I have never been able to grasp the "mask" tool. I have done layers with the magic extractor to get a similar effect.

I have that statue (head & Lyre only) on my B&W Film. I need to PRINT IT and SCAN IT!

I have started playing with the scanner-

Here is the print formerly named "delicious" wrongly labeled "Butterfly" at the art show- but it worked. hehehehe.

Here is the print formerly known as "Butterfly". Wrongly labeled "Delicious" at the art show. Don't tell the owner of the lips BUT I had to wipe lip prints off the glass when I took it down today. She would be mortified.

Off topic warning... How could I have gotten the sunglasses to show up better on her face in this pic, other than moving her to a sunnier spot?

the tricky thing about those glasses is the color. it's so close to skin color. in your avatar is that the close up angled version? play with the contrast (oh me i forget your software again) levels (brighten up a bit even though will be bright.)if you have them and the detail on the right side will come out pretty good. your daughter will look like she is in really bright sun, but that fits.

very cute sunglasses.

Tex, this is the perfect place to ask this question: I agree that the value of the sunglasses and the rest of the face is too close for color. The avatar is clever. I would be tempted to see if you could select the sunglasses and try raising the yellow saturation.

Ezri, thanks for scanning the photos... seeing the photos up close makes it easier to understand the story behind these two prints.

You need fill flash. Your subject was backlit somewhat and fill flash is needed to bring the exposure into more balance.

Here's a link to a terrific set of articles on lighting. Yes, it's geared for SLR cameras and yes it's more than most need. Still, a fundamental understanding of light and how to supplement/augment it will lead to memorable images.

Tx- I used the magnetic lasso tool in my adobe elements 5

-I dropped the photo in as 2 different layers
-chose the 2nd layer and did the magnetic lasso around the glasses (this took some clicking)
-chose the "sponge" tool, set it to Saturate and 80% then went over the glasses until they were the shade I wanted
-Clicked off and then COPIED/PASTED the magnetic lasso area
-I made sure my sunglasses had been pasted by themselves into a separate layer then deleted the second full image layer.
-Then I selected the original photo layer and set the sponge to desaturate at 50% and went over the entire photo til I got it where I liked it.

It sounds like a lot but it really took very little time.

See results of the tongue photo --> HERE

Let me know what you think and if you want the photo to come down. I just wanted to share how I had played with it. I am the kinda person that has to do it to be able to tell how it is done.
