I am on another forum (www.exisle.com) which has a fan-fic section mostly devoted to derivative works from the Andromeda SF TV show.
They show a small icon (orange square with a white corner) that starts the name of each thread you have read, and a briefcase with a white corner in each thread you have posted in, and if you click the square, it takes you to the last read post. (the squares are not there unless you are signed in and are ONLY in threads with new material) So you can see at a quick glance which threads have new posts since you last looked at that thread and which you have posted in somewhere in the past.
That would be really nice to have here..........

We have something like that here. If the little yellow post it is there it means there's a new post. It takes you too the last read post. If you only want the ones you contributed to then sub to everything you post in and look in "mysubs"

Ok.
The purpose of it is to see in one place whether there is activity in any threads that you post in. The assumption is that those are the threads you are most interested in. You can also sub to folders and can receive an email when there is a new post in that folder.
As for how:
In my profile under Posting Preferences you can choose to automatically subscribe to any thread you post in. WHen you then go to "My forums" you will see the folders you sub to and then underneath and thread you are subbed to.
