Hi, this is my first post and the real reason Im here, but I am so glad I found this forum. I've spent about an hour reading various discussions already and cant wait to read more. OK, first a little back ground info...my 13 year old daughter has been making me crazy, defying rules, lying, etc. As part of her punishment recently her father told her to write a "paper" for us that told of biblical examples of why children should obey their parents and some consequences of when they didn't. Basically she took the first few scriptures she came across and tried to tailor them to fit her situation. I was not please with the result, but I also thought it was a very hard thing to judge as being acceptable. Her dad said that it was ok with him and seeing as it was his punishment I didn't say too much more. Driving home from care group tonight I had the idea that I would write my own paper on the responsibilities of a parenting, what the bible says is our responsibilities and how we are suppose to handle it. The first scripture that came to me was in Proverbs 13 about disciplining and loving your children, (or rather, "spare the rod, spoil the child") Anyway, after being a Christian for 9 years I am finally reading the bible all the way through right now... never having done this before. I am not really knowledgeable on a lot of bible stories, so this is where I am asking for a little assistance. I am looking for a little direction, and just the scripture address is fine, on where I might find stories that tell of children disobeying their parents where we see the consequences, also obeying and the rewards, stories of deceit, lies and manipulation, that might relate to a young person. Also other passages that might instruct parents. (I know Ephesians 6) I am starting to search for myself now, but would welcome any direction anyone might offer.

I can't think of anything of hand right now, but David admonished and instrucyed Solomon to walk in the ways of the LORD, we learn from his life that he strayed, marrying many women who were idol worshipper and eventually lost a huge portion of his kingdom. Adam, who according to Luke 3:38, was referred to as "the son of God" and we see the consequences of his disobedience to his FATHER.

Anyway, after being a Christian for 9 years I am finally reading the bible all the way through right now... never having done this before. That's wonderful to hear! : ) I hope it is a fruitful, growing experience for you. There's the story in Genesis 9:20-27 where one of Noah's sons mocks him, but the other two honor him, and as a result, the mocker is cursed, but those that honor him are blessed. That's all I can come up with off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are lots in there somewhere!

Greetings, You might read up on Eli's son's Hophni and Phinehas, and their disobedience of Eli's warning/scolding in 1 Samuel chapter 2.

The first story that came to mind to me would be in Genesis the story of Jacob who was deceitful in getting the blessing then when it came to marriage time he was in return deceived and given Leah instead of Rachel. This and the ones previously mentioned are main ones I can think of off hand that deal with children and parents directly. However the entire history of Israel deals with obedience and disobedience of Israel to the LORD. As for parenting there are many times the LORD instructs Israel to set up monuments of remembrance and when their children ask what it means the parents are to teach their children the story behind the monument. Of course proverbs is good for parenting. There is one section in Deuteronomy of the Law where the Lord instructs Israel to stone a rebellious son this would be Deut. 21:16-21. Of course this may not be best to share with teen daughter. Hope some of these help a little. will pray for you and by the way Welcome to the Forums

Thanks for the ideas... I had already noted Jacob and his deciept to his father and his later being decieved. That was the only one that came to mind for me. I have never done anything like this and am finding it very fun and interesting so far. When I had the idea, I really didnt think about the final result, bvut I do know it was something I was prompted by the Holy Spirit to do. I am already understanding why. Not just for my daughter, nbut also for myself. I was up til 3 am studying and trying to find differnt relevant scripture. I cant wait to see what this turns out to be. quote:

This was exact scripture that my daughter quoted in her paper. She tried in just a few lines to relate this to her offenses... she didnt succeed. I said very little to her about her final paper, but did talk to my husband about my feelings about it not being exactly what he intended it to be. He did go back and make notes and corrections on her paper, which now is a draft. He and I agreed to wait and see what I find in my writing before we say more to her. I'm going to start writing today. Please pray for me.

I would also look in Proverbs and Deuteronomy where you will find instructions. Unfortunately, if you look for examples, you will find very few good examples of parenting in the Bible. The main instructions parents have is that we are to teach our children the scriptures. Aside from that, much of what we consider good parenting is culturally defined. Here is a sermon help about parenting with 10 instructions. Notice that only 2 instructions have scripture references (though I think they could have done a better job of finding more!) Again a big thank you to all that have responded. When I came up with this assignment for myself, I really had no idea how it would turn out. I had a couple scripture references in mind and a general theme and nothing more. In talking to my husband beforehand, he encouraged me but also questioned what I thought it would accomplish. I told him I really didn't know, but wanted to just take what little I had and see what happened. Yesterday as I started writing it didn't take me very long to realize the Holy Spirit was guiding and prompting me with more ideas and words. Never having done anything like this before, I was both pleased and surprised with what was being produced. With four typed pages and half dozen more in references and ideas I was able to share my progress with my spiritual mom. We were both excited. UNTIL... Along came Satan... in short, my paper is gone. I cant say what exactly happened. I have been in the process the last couple weeks of cleaning up my PC and moving important files to a larger external drive. I spent about half an hour doing that yesterday and when I was ready to work more on my paper it wasn't there. I looked everywhere, performed searches on both drives... installed an Undelete program, spent 3 hours letting it scan recoverable deleted items and I finally found it. I restore and open the file only to find it is corrupt beyond repair. I recognized immediately the work of the enemy. SO... I am going to do all I can do at this point and as soon as this is posted, I will begin again. I would covet your prayers as I continue.

I know the frustration! However, don't give the enemy credit too soon. Perhaps the Lord wants you to store your knowledge somewhere besides your computer. A good test of how well you learned it would be to see how easily you can recreate it.
