This verse was shared in a recent exchange and it's got me curious. I'm wondering how many of you interpret this to mean that people who go to heaven will have no memory of their earthly life.

Isaiah 65:17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

I've heard some put it that way. It seems to me that having one's memory wiped clean would be akin to annihilation.

That's a good question. I have thought about it from time to time. I am no Bible scholar but it could it mean the physical earth and heavens memory will be wiped clean but not the people who will be changed to their resurrected bodies. In any case, God says it will be eternal joy.

Isaiah isn't writing didactically, but rather prophetically, which uses almost poetic language. I believe that what Isaiah might be getting at here is not a complete removal of this life's memories, but rather such a vastly improved existence that all the past hurts will cease to be called to memory in a painful way anymore.

Could it mean, that there will be no trace of the physical heaven/earth left? Not that we won't remember, but there will be no reminders.

past memories in heaven?

If we rule with Christ during the 1,000 year reign on earth, we might have all our memories including what we did wrong and what we failed to do right. This might aid us in the work we have to do. However, after this time, It might be a mercy from God to remove these memories so that we would not have an eternity of regret, remorse, and shame.

Revelation 21:4
And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

But memories, even the painful ones, make us who we are.

I hope I don't lose my painful memories... because those are the things that brought me to the knowledge that I needed (and still need) Christ, and His forgiveness and help.

May I never forget that.

Revelation 21:3-4
One day I will wipe away every tear from your eyes. And I'll take away all the pain you have suffered on this earth.

Misery and sorrow cannot enter into heaven. By this indication, memories of sorrow, pain, and great suffering will not be recalled to mind.
