Seems that everytime someone brings up sin, gluttony is thrown into the mix, with the asumption that all overweight people are gluttons. The definitions vary, but I think gluttony is eating to the point of being sick, or eating to keep someone else from having the food at hand, such as kids with the last slice of pie. I have know overweight people who I would not consider gluttons, (they exercise and are active, and don't pile the plate food, but do eat high fat foods) and some think people who pack it in and never gain weight..who I would consider to be gluttons. Unhealthy eating does not equate with gluttony, IMO. Two separate issues. So, we know that gluttony is a sin. What would be a good working definition of the word, as it was meant in scripture. Can gluttony apply to things other than food? Is it equated with selfishness?

I also do not believe gluttony = overweight. There are plenty of gluttonous people who are thin. I think gluttony refers to overindulging in anything, or rather, not practicing self-control.

I think a lot of asumptions go on..all overweight people are considered gluttons by some...and the culture standards of what is overweight keep getting slimmer and slimmer.

Gluttony does not mean overweight. Gluttony in scripture means a lover of food or wine. "Do not let your heart envy sinners, But live in the fear of the LORD always. Surely there is a future, And your hope will not be cut off. Listen, my son, and be wise, And direct your heart in the way. Do not be with heavy drinkers of wine, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe one with rags." (Proverbs 23:17-21)

Seems to me that people use gluttony as a diversion tactic to change the conversation away from some other sin they are guilty of. Is gluttony the same as obsession? The woman who balloons in weight after a hysterectomy..it not a glutton, but will be acused of it because of her looks.

I have always thought the warning of "gluttony" in Scripture is warning against the "love" of food, the craving for it beyond reason. Making food an idol. But what do I know?

I love cherry pie. I don't think that is a sin. If I eat half a pie even though I am not hungry, or to keep someone else from having it, that would be.

Gluttony is an inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires...be it food, wine, cars, computers, homes, money....it's not just having these things, but consuming them beyond what you need.

Oh!! like preachers and expensive golf clubs! Exactly. Seriously, there is a close correlation between gluttony, coveting, lusting...it's all kind of related, right?

Stella, I think it is related. However, it is easier to judge someone's rear end or love handles than it is owning a lot of stuff. They used to call it materialism, but that is out of style with preaching these days.

Mrs. Dash, here is the only reference I know of: Do not be with heavy drinkers of wine, Or with gluttonous eaters of meat; For the heavy drinker and the glutton will come to poverty, And drowsiness will clothe one with rags." (Proverbs 23:17-21) The question, is what is gluttony as it was meant in biblical day? Any of our scholars in Hebrew standing by? This is in the Old Testament, so is it not applicable for today's believers?

Here is what I have been able to find out: Gluttony: Hebrew from zalal, "to shake," hence to "be loose" morally. A debauchee (Deuteronomy 21:20; Proverbs 23:21); "gluttonous" (Proverbs 23:20; 28:27), meaning a free liver, one who is unrestrained (Matthew 11:19; Luke 7:34 Another definition for "glutton" comes from The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, which says, in part, "zalel, "to be lavish; ... To shake or pour out, ... to be lavish, a squanderer."

I've been pondering that the scripture says "...gulttonous eaters of meat" too. Why do you think meat would be "singled out" so to speak? Not just "gluttonous eaters"? Just a quirk of my mind I guess, but I wonder why.

Maybe meat was harder to come by than grain foods....so gobbling it all up was considered worse. It seems that waste of food was part of gluttony too.

Gluttony is what happens to me at Chipotle. And in New Orleans, come to think of it.

interesting, Mrs. Dash. Pagan practices flowed into Israel. Perhaps gluttony was something akin to Belshazzar's shindigs.
