Our contributor Beth Ann Baus wrote [this amazing article](https://www.crosswalk.com/family/marriage/will-i-recognize-my-spouse-in-heaven.html) on this topic.

But everyone has different views on what we can expect in Heaven. So, what do you think? Do you think you will recognize your husband or wife in Heaven? Do you think marriage will still exist?

Our pastor once said from the pulpit that in heaven there will be no marriage… his wife piped up from the congregation, “Amen”.

There was laughter but I do agree. I don’t pretend to understand how it all works because Jesus said there will be no giving in marriage but that we will be like the angels.

It is an interesting topic for sure.

IMO, there are several indications in Scripture that we will maintain our identity in heaven and, thus, be recognizable to our loved ones (and they to us), which would include our former spouses, but it will be an entirely different relationship as a fellow-heir, not as spouse.

In Matthew 17:1-8, Peter, James and John recognized Moses and Elijah. In 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20, Paul expected to recognize in heaven the Thessalonian Christians to whom he had ministered on earth (see a similar situation in 2 Corinthians 1:14).

In addition, Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:12, “For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known” (NKJ). That last phrase, “I shall know just as I also am known” would indicate that we shall know others as well as be known by others.

I want to give credit to the Back to the Bible website for expanding my thought that originally was based on 1 Corinthians 13:12.

When the glory of Jesus was revealed in the transfiguration, we are told that “Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with him” (Matthew 17:3).

Luke chapter 16

Two sides of the Gulf.
Paradise
Sheol

The Rich man died and went to shed, called hell. Holding place for the spiritually dead and wicked.

Lazarus went to paradise.

Across the Gulf, Rich man recognized Lazarus.

Yes. We will recognize our loved ones, friends and adversary s.

Peace.

Jd88,

re: “The Rich man died and went to shed…Lazarus went to paradise…Across the Gulf, Rich man recognized Lazarus.”

Any thoughts on the distance from the shed to paradise?

i love the book, “Reflections on Life After Life” by Raymond A. Moody Jr, M.D. it is the sequel to the original book, i need to get the original because this one is so good!

the people he interviewed for this book were all of judeo-christian backgrounds.

it indicates from many near-death experiences that yes we will recognize loved ones… including those we hadnt known were dead!

marriage existing in heaven, however is never really mentioned.

Way too funny! \<Grin!\>

Well, for the husband I am with right now, sure, I’ll know him, but as the old song says, "I want to see my SAVIOR first of all!!

But when it comes to seeing Pat, he has been with ADONAI since 1977, but i am the one who has **gotten fat and gotten OLD!** I will know him immediately, for sure!! And I can hardly wait!! He is going to be blown away when he sees our children, blown away when he finds out he has GRANDCHILDREN!!! and totally rattled when he sees Rory and I tell him he is her great-grandfather!!! After all, he wasn’t even 30 yet when he went to be with ADONAI!!!

After his father had gone, when our son was a boy and just starting to really noticing girls, he fell hard for a little girl at our church. He came to me and pensively asked, "Mommy, does love ever die? I assured him that it does **not** die, ever. Wow, I did not know at the time just how true that is. It is a good thing for me, I guess, in a way, that my present husband lost his first wife, because he ivery understanding when I get misty-eyed.

And that little girl our son fell in love with as a boy?? The to of them have been married since about 1998!! How many years is that? WOWZER! ! ! 27 years!!! Ten years fewer than my present husband and I!!

I believe I’ll recognize my spouse in heaven. While our earthly marriage won’t carry over, our bond in Christ will remain, and I trust we’ll know each other, only in a more complete way.

Jesus said there won’t be marriage in the resurrection ([Matthew 22:30](https://www.biblestudytools.com/matthew/22-30.html)), but that doesn’t mean we lose who we are or forget those we’ve loved. In fact, the Bible gives us glimpses of recognition beyond this life—like when the disciples knew it was Moses and Elijah on the mountain (Matthew 17), or when the rich man and Lazarus recognized each other after death (Luke 16).

I believe heaven will be filled with perfect love, free from sorrow or sin. My husband and I will no longer be bound by the roles we had on earth, but we’ll be part of the same family.

“Then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known” ([1 Corinthians 13:12](https://www.biblestudytools.com/1-corinthians/13-12.html)). What a comfort to hold onto that promise.
