Does Easter Have Pagan Origins?

Just curious @SincereSeeker, are you “tracking” me?

Shalom to you, @David_Koberstein, and thank you for sharing that.

You’re right that the name “Easter” likely has connections to the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre, and that symbols like eggs and bunnies reflect older fertility customs. That’s part of the historical backdrop, especially in Western cultures.

But for many Christians, Easter is not about the name or the seasonal symbols. It is about the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, the cornerstone of our faith as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15. The day is set apart to remember and rejoice in the victory over sin and death.

I respect the choice of Messianic believers to distance themselves from anything with pagan associations. Just as Romans 14 reminds us, each one should be fully convinced in their own mind. If Christ is the focus, whether one observes Resurrection Day or refrains from Easter, let it be done unto the Lord.
