From school chaplains to state-funded religious charter schools, the line between church and state in the classroom is getting harder to define. A recent poll shows Americans are split: many support chaplains offering student support in public schools, but far fewer favor allowing religious institutions to receive public education dollars.
Even within the Church, there’s tension. Some see this as a long-overdue restoration of moral foundations. Others worry that faith-based favoritism will backfire—or lead to government overreach in religious matters.
So where should Christians land on this? How do we balance religious liberty, equal access, and the Great Commission in a pluralistic society?
