Matthew 24:36? Any thoughts on this verse?

So there has to be a deeper meaning to this verse when He sais that the Son does not no the hour in which he comes back the second time does not make sense to me. Any thoughts?

@DiamondDog Matthew 24:36 means that the exact day and hour of Jesus’ return are known only to God the Father, not even by the angels or Jesus Himself, emphasizing the unknowable, sudden nature of this event, and calling believers to constant watchfulness and readiness. It was also a way for us, as children of God, to know false prophets that rise and say Jesus is here or there.

Only the Father holds the precise timing for the end times. The second coming will be unexpected, like a thief in the night or the flood in Noah’s day, disrupting normal life. As for “The Son Does Not Know”: it is because Jesus voluntarily set aside His divine knowledge (kenosis) or acted in submission to the Father, or that He speaks from His human perspective. In essence, Matthew 24:36 is a pivotal text stressing vigilance and trust in God’s timing, preventing date-setting and encouraging faithful living in light of the inevitable, yet unknown, arrival of the Son of Man.

There is a variability with free will. Israel was promised an earthly kingdom yet they failed to receive it. They will receive it in the future. The time of the gentiles will end, but it is variable based on criteria that only God knows.

The choices we make are free will and this introduces uncertainty.

As for me, I’m guessing that Jesus knows now.

Remember that during His earthly ministry, Jesus said that everything He did was by the Holy Spirit, and that nothing that He did was by His own will - He only did what He saw His Father doing.

He didn’t know all the names of the people in China, He didn’t know all the stars in the sky, He didn’t know how to make ice cream, and so on. So He also didn’t know everything that God had future planned either.

I personally suspect that things are different now, with nothing of the Father’s plans hid from Him, but there is no clear scriptural teaching to that effect.

I don’t think Jesus knew the timing of the end during His earthly life. Only the Father knew. But when Jesus ascended to the Father, all this was disclosed to Him.

The Lord Jesus in the Incarnation accepted the limitations of human flesh, and willed Himself to just know as a huamn man woudl know , while still remaining fully God while upon the Earth
