Proverbs 18:24: How does this verse challenge modern ideas of friendship and social media connections?

That verse contrasts many companions with one friend who sticks closer than a brother. In a culture where “friends” can number in the hundreds or thousands online, the distinction feels sharper than ever.

It suggests that depth matters more than volume. Real friendship, in the biblical sense, seems rooted in loyalty, consistency, and shared burden, not just shared interests or frequent interaction.

Social media makes connection easier, but it can also blur the line between acquaintance and covenantal friendship. The verse challenges me to ask not how many connections I have, but whether I’m cultivating, and being, the kind of friend who remains steady when things aren’t curated or convenient.

C. S. Lewis wrote a book called ‘The Four Loves’ and one of those loves is friendship. You can find it in pdf form online to read. I agree with his assessment of friendship.

I have few friends and lots of acquaintances. I question anyone who says they have lots of friends and would want to know what a friendship means to them.
