Rev. Kevin R. Johnson, the new pastor of Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City, wants to make traditional church services feel fresh and exciting for younger generations. He believes people can wear ties and dresses and still feel cool while keeping the church’s rich history alive. With a focus on unity, love, and faith, Johnson is working to revive the church’s spirit and show that traditional worship still has a place in today’s world.
What are your thoughts? Should churches keep a strict dress code to honor their traditions or let the congregation wear what they feel most comfortable in?
When we go to Church in our Sunday Best, we don’t do it for looks. We don’t wear suits and button up shirts to impress God. We do this out of respect of God. More than changing dress code, he should focus on the way his church appeals to Gen Z from an event, entertainent, and evangelical standpoint.
My v iew is people should attend church in whatever they feel comfortable as long as its modest. The Lord looks at the heart, not outward appearance. I was saved back in the late 1970s and attended a very traditional AOG pentecostal church where everybody wore suits etc. However, the down side of this was off putting to new people as the area that the church was in was quite a deprived area. People living there could barely afford basic lving , let alone buying a suit. Come as you are is my message.
Rev. Kevin R. Johnson’s vision for Abyssinian Baptist Church beautifully blends tradition with modern relevance. He aims to make traditional worship appealing to younger generations, proving that you can wear a suit or dress and still feel stylish and confident. His leadership focuses on uniting the congregation, embracing the church’s rich historical legacy, and paving the way for a brighter future. With an emphasis on unity, love, and community, Johnson is infusing new energy into this historic church, and it will be exciting to see how he shapes its future.
