Today’s Verse for Monday, March 16

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers Psalm 1:1

Going back some years, this is the first psalm I memorized and in its simplicity, its wisdom is gold. I didn’t heed the warning at one time and only in hindsight did I understand what it was trying to tell me.

There’s a progression; walk, stand, sit. It’s not saying we have nothing to do with unbelievers. For that to happen, we would have to leave this world. But it is saying that when you walk with the wicked, be careful that you don’t stand in their ways because you will end up sitting with them and begin to doubt. We venture into the world, but first we must be immersed in God’s word. Like a tree planted by a river, we are sustained and provided for. We bear fruit and never wither. Everything we do when we are fully committed to God will end up for the good.

Only those who know who they are in Christ and are dedicated to following Him, can chance a walk with the wicked. They become a light shining in their darkness and if you aren’t careful, a compromise can come about. Once you’ve compromised, its a small step to sitting down with them and being lured into their thinking. It’s dangerous and not everyone is called to evangelize. Only to those who meditate on His word and find their delight in it, can venture to do so.

Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the LORD will inherit the land. Psalm 37:8-9

Anger is usually a split second emotion. Anyone who spends time thinking about what was said or done without that instantaneous spark usually doesn’t become angry. They become something else. Sad maybe or disappointed. And anger can be contagious. When someone comes at you with angry and fiery words, our first response is often to become angry in turn. I believe emotions are transferrable and only in knowing that, can you stop it. Because of that, refraining from anger and turning from wrath is not an easy thing to do. We have to be aware and be aware in that split second. The longer you don’t deal with it, the harder it becomes. It’s like an over boiled stew that keeps boiling after you’ve turned the heat off. Going from hot to cold takes time so don’t let it become hot.

What’s helped me in times when anger is directed my way is something I heard. They said that the root cause of anger is either frustration, or fear, or hurt, or a combination of these. In knowing that, and knowing that’s behind the words being thrown at me, gives me a sense of compassion for the one who is out of control. The anger is just the manifestation of their hurt or their fear or how frustrated they feel. And this helps me not to become angry in turn which is what a turning from wrath is.

I think the question we need to ask ourselves if we’re feeling that anger, is why do I feel this way? What is it that’s made me mad? Is it ego? Do I feel insulted? Is it my pride that’s risen up in defense?

I remember reading something that spoke to me. A general in the US army said some very nasty things about President Lincoln back when he was president. An officer who overheard him went and told Lincoln what the man said. Lincoln responded first with praising the general and saying what a fine officer he was. He then said he would think about it carefully, for if such a fine man as this general said those things, then perhaps there was some truth in what he said.

Talk about humility!

Today’s Verse for Monday, March 23

Come, let us return to the LORD. He has torn us to pieces but he will heal us; he has injured us but he will bind up our wounds. After two days he will revive us; on the third day he will restore us, that we may live in his presence. Hosea 6:1-2

Wow. I do not know why, but this really hit me today. I am going to have to meditate on it and pray about it. There is a message there somewhere.

If you’ve grievously sinned and are going through the consequences of that sin, a moment like this might arrive. It’s the moment of realizing what it is you’ve done and what it’s cost you. It’s the prodigal son returning home. It’s the longing for what you once had and the recognition that all you need is return to the Lord. God will heal and bind you up. You can live in the Light of Christ again. It’s a confession and surrender to the One who revives. It’s a return home.

Today’s Verse for Thursday, March 26

He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all—how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? Romans 8:32

When God gave His Son, the world didn’t understand what God had given. The disciples didn’t get it. Three plus years of living with Jesus and they didn’t understand. Even as it happened, they didn’t know that it was God who gave and why He gave.

God freely gives us all things. Even when we don’t understand what we’ve been given, He has given. Sometimes His giving is a blessed ‘no’ to what we’ve asked because He can only give us good things. The ‘all things’ is our spiritual food to grow in faith and fellowship with Him. These He freely gives and it began when He gave us His Son.

There’s the world and we have one foot in it, and there’s His kingdom and we have one foot in there. This is what our life is about. Leaning first on one and then the other. His ‘all things’ draw us ever closer to His presence. It looks like strength, endurance, joy, hope and a sacrificial love. He gave His Son up to death so that we wouldn’t die. Who has done that? Who loves like that? I will trust in His ‘all things’ as I trust in the sun to rise each morning. He gave His Son. My God is for me and gives me all things.

Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves.

“It is written,” he said to them, “ ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”

This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life. Lev 17:11

Until this time the command was not to eat the meat with the blood and in the NT the Gentiles were told to abstain from blood. And yet Jesus tells us we are to drink His blood, and by it we have eternal life.
