So many churches are youth oriented to the point anyone over 50 may be unwanted, or regulated to the pew. My friend’s church replaced all teachers with people under 40. The pastor makes boomer jokes from the pulpit. My friend and his wife are searching for a new church after trying to talk to the pastor and being told “maybe this church isn’t for you”. They have been active members for years.
Have you seen or experienced this? Is it modern culture being embraced by the church, or is it a growth project of some sort? Tithing isn’t what it once was when you retire b
I’m so thankful that my church isn’t like that. We have involvement from teens up to elders. One woman has been attending our church since childhood & she’s well into her 70s now, and still faithfully teaches older elementary Sunday School, AND plays keyboard with the Worship Team. I, myself, will be turning 60 next month (from today, actually) and am very involved: Church clerk, Children’s Church assistant, Worship Team (tambourine & vocals), coffee-maker, and my family sets up communion once a month. Involvement is encouraged for all ages.
However, the youth aren’t ignored either. Side note: our church is very involved in fostering and adoption. There are so many adopted kiddos that it’s hard to tell who is biologically related and who isn’t.
That’s tough. I see where some churches might intentionally have a mission toward an age group, but I think one of the signs of a healthy church is a wide range of ages who are part of the congregation. The youth need the wisdom of the elderly and the elderly need the younger generations too.
And, no matter your age, everyone needs Jesus and to be fed by the Word among a body of believers.
We have a wonderful ministry at our church started by a delightful couple in their “boomer” stage of life. It is called Friends Fellowship, and it meets Wednesday mornings from 10 - 11:30 (sometimes noon). Everyone 50 or above are welcome and invited. We have coffee, worship, bible study, snack, devotional and leave. One day a month we bring potluck for lunch together. We have close to 50 on average, with over 15 churches represented!. It’s a wonderful place for friendship, fellowship, and fun. It’s safe, fun, and healthy! We’ve been going over 15 years now and everyone really loves it. Over 50’s are one of the largest unreached groups believe it or not! So many grew up in church but have not yet begun a personal relationship with Jesus. Try it, you’ll love it.
