Should parents wait to teach these parts of scripture to kids until they are at an age to not be terribly frightened?

They absolutely should not wait to teach them about hell, they just have to do it in a kid-friendly way.

same as @Rev12_11 . certain details might not be worth mentioning at early age, UNLESS child asks, but overall, no holding back.
Anyone telling these stories should tell the whole story, not just the dramatic part. Children have a sense of justice and know that wrong doing will result in punishment.
Unfortunately modern life is full of brutal incidents and life cannot be hidden from children.
Bible stories as well as fairy stories do prepare children for the realities of life.
