Curious How Christians Discern What’s ‘Cultural’ vs. What’s Biblical?

Something I keep noticing in conversations (online and in real life) is how often people say, “That’s just cultural,” or, “That’s biblical truth,” especially around current issues.

It made me wonder how everyone here approaches that.

How do you personally tell the difference between something that’s just part of our culture today versus something Scripture speaks to directly?
Do you have a process you follow, like going to certain passages, talking with mentors, prayer, looking at historical context?

I’d love to hear how others navigate this, especially when society moves fast and opinions are all over the place.

I think the answer is pretty simple. Read this {Holding up the bible}. If what someone or something tells you is not in here, or is contrary to this, then it is simply a lie.

Not only does man say it’s OK for a woman to slaughter her unborn innocent child, but we made it legal for her to do so; we actually call it a “Right.” This in no way makes it lawful in God’s eyes. He sees it as the murder of the most innocent of all life. Genesis 9:5-6, 26, Psalm 139:13-16, Exodus 21:23-25, just a few places where God tells us how reprehensible He sees abortion.

Man says, “Homosexuality, now Trans-everything and or however you identify yourself, is OK. Not only is it OK, but it’s also the law. You have no right to speak out against it. You hate-filled, racist, ghauvinistic, backwoods hick. Everyone has a “Right” to do whatever they choose. You are the one with the problem. Not them. They are to be accepted and praised for their “bravery” and for being so special.” God is clear on homosexuality. Leviticus 18:1-5, 22-24, 29, Leviticus 20:13, Ezekiel 16:49-51, Romans 1:18-32, Transgenderism- Deuteronomy 22:5, Romans 1:18-32, 1 Corinthians 11:14-15, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, Pedophilia - Mark 9:42, Luke 17:1-37, 2 Timothy 3:1-17, 1 Corinthians 5:1-6,Beastiality- Leviticus 18:19-30, Exodus 22:19

The Bible makes it extremely clear that marriage, between one man and one woman, needs to be honored.

For as Paul warned us in Romans 1.

"For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.

For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools and changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four-footed beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen."

For this reason, God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.

They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, and malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, and ruthless. Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but approve those who practice them."

Allow this to be your guide, and trust in God. Always.

Usually excusing something the bible declares as wrong as “wrong for them” is simply a way to not be bothered by what the bible says. Satan set the course of the world (Eph 2:2). He has designed it to draw people in by an appeal to the flesh.

Jas 4:4 Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Amen @PeterC I absolutely and whole-heartedly agree. I read in a post on social media, a comment about abortion and homosexuality being political issues rather than biblical. I had to respond with basically what you just said. No. Abortion is murder. Homosexuality is a sin. Neither are political. Both are biblical. Amen.
