Do Christians Need Daily Devotionals... or Just the Bible Alone?

Are devotionals a spiritual lifeline—or a distraction from the Word itself?

For centuries, Christians have turned directly to the Bible as the primary and sufficient source of God’s truth. But in more recent generations, devotionals—whether daily readings, guided reflections, or thematic studies—have become part of many believers’ rhythms.

Some find devotionals to be helpful tools: a way to provide structure, to keep them accountable, or to frame Scripture in a relatable, real-world context. Others, however, worry that reliance on devotionals can slowly nudge believers away from deep engagement with the Bible itself, offering small bite-sized reflections rather than wrestling with the fullness of God’s Word.

This tension raises practical and spiritual questions: Do devotionals supplement our walk with God—or risk replacing it? Should Christians be concerned that their quiet time has become more about another author’s words than the living Word? On the other hand, could devotionals be one of the means God uses to encourage, guide, and strengthen those who might otherwise drift from consistent Scripture reading?

Where do you fall on this? Are devotionals a blessing, a stumbling block, or something in between?

Do the average Christians actually do independent studies of the bible or is it a case of using a daily bible reading book or nothing?

Devotionals are okay, Fritzpw_Admin, but from personal experience, I recommend reading the whole Bible, perhaps without the lists of names but getting the overall idea and moving on. I read on the average two chapters a day, one at each of two meals. God has blessed my plan in my life, which I have done many times. The Word grows more of a blessing each time.
