Do Grandparents Have Spiritual Responsibilities for Their Grandkids?

In a world where family roles are shifting, what place do grandparents have in the spiritual shaping of the next generation?

For some families, grandparents are the quiet prayer warriors, faithfully lifting their grandkids before the Lord. For others, they are hands-on mentors—teaching Scripture, modeling faith, and sharing testimonies of God’s work over decades. But in other homes, grandparents may be sidelined, unsure whether it’s their place to speak into spiritual matters.

Scripture is full of examples where faith is passed from generation to generation—yet the Bible doesn’t give a one-size-fits-all blueprint for how grandparents should engage. Should they take an active role in teaching and discipling? Or should they primarily support and encourage from the sidelines, letting parents lead the way?

In today’s culture, where children face spiritual challenges earlier and more intensely than ever, the question becomes urgent: how much responsibility do grandparents bear for helping shape their grandchildren’s walk with God?
