When the thunder rolls and the path ahead vanishes in the rain, we often wonder—where is God? Has He left us? Or is He actually closer than ever?

This powerful devotional by Alexis Goring shares a story from Rob Bell’s NOOMA series about carrying his toddler through a violent storm—whispering comfort and love the whole way. Bell’s point? The child only saw the storm… but the father never let go.

It echoes Psalm 34:18: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” God doesn’t wait for us to get it all together—He rushes into our chaos and carries us through. In our most broken moments, His nearness is not just theology—it’s survival.

“You’re not just safe when you arrive. You’re safe in the storm, because your Father is with you.”

What’s a time when you felt God’s nearness during a storm? Did it change how you viewed Him afterward?

Greetings in the Lord, Fritzpw

I enjoyed your post. And totally agree that, that is exactly what the Father does, even though we may watch the storm, Holy Spirit is always prompting us to keep our heart and eyes on Jesus and He gives us songs of encouragement along the way. Yes, I have been in many storms, but God kept me close as I cried out to HIM and He comforted me with His Word, and put people in my pathway that spoke an encouraging word that I know came from the Lord because only the Lord knew what I was going through. Yes, Our God is an awesome God,who rules from heaven to my heart via His Holy Ghost in Jesus name.

Remembering Psalm 34:18 The Lord is close to the brokenhearted…

The Father’s blessings to you and your household in Jesus name, so be it.
