Do you like the music at church?

Do you like the music played at your church? Is it different than it was years ago?

I love the music at our church, and itā€™s not just because Iā€™m a member of the Worship Team. We do a combination of Contemporary Christian and old-time hymns. Weā€™re not flashy & thereā€™s not a pro among us (although our guitarist IS award-winning, locally). They lead worship with hearts for the Lord and not on themselves.

I do like it, most weeks. But it changes frequently, which is a good thing I suppose-- yet that also means that sometimes I donā€™t like it. Each to their own.

I attend a large church with infrastructure that enables attendees to select a venue that suits their musical tastes. One could choose a traditional venue that might include organ music and old hymns, or something contemporary and a little rocky for the young crowd (the Edge) ā€“ even a bluegrass/country venue, and so on. There are about half a dozen choices.

At the ā€˜Liveā€™ venue, which we favor-- the music is contemporary Christian worship music-- songs by Phil Wickham, Michael W Smith, and so on, as well as original music by our own worship team-- all professional musicians. What I donā€™t like is the way they have turned the church service into what sometimes feels like a Saturday night concert event, complete with light effects, smoke machines, etcā€¦ so unneccesary in my opinion, but then everyone has one.

20 years ago, I would have emphatically said ā€œno.ā€ Thatā€™s when I moved from a more contemporary style to a more traditional one. I missed the emotions the contemporary stuff evoked.
Nowadays, weā€™re even more traditional than 20 years ago, because the only musician we have (an organist) cannot play contemporary stuff. Syncopation and such is way beyond that 80-something-year-old. So, traditional hymns it is.
And itā€™s okay with me. Over the years Iā€™ve come to appreciate the depth that the hymns have. Would I rather have something besides organ music? Yes, but thatā€™s all weā€™ve got right now.

I donā€™t really enjoy the music itself, but I definitely love the messages of the songs we sing. Which is kinda weird since Iā€™m actually on the worship team. Our style is more contemporary, but I enjoy Skillet-style music.

Our church has some pretty incredible worship. We did this one on Sunday and it always has me in tears by the end!

That sounds exactly like what we do at the church I attend. I am also on our Praise Team, as well as the leader for the hymns we sing. I absolutely love what we do for music-something for both ā€œage groupsā€. Our congregation seems happy with both music types. Our Pastor is young (37) and wants hymns included in our service. I (62) totally agree.

For some reason, the clip wonā€™t playā€¦ ?

Wow! That church is huge! Where do you attend?

Of course everything today is choruses repeated a million times, but tastes and trends change do I accept it. But sometimes I think about the little hymn and southern gospel church I was raised it. I miss the old music.

Youā€™re fortunate. The (Catholic) church I attended as a child had no music. Well, not exactly. There was a choir, and they sang during Saturday evening masses, but never on Sundays, and my dad was firm that Church was for Sundays. I didnā€™t hear any of the old-time hymns until I was well into adulthood. The saddest thing is that music is pretty much my life.

Itā€™s interesting to see that so many of ā€˜the new songsā€™ are essentially remixed or reprisals of those old songs that we know and love. I quite like a lot of them that are throwbacks. A lot of new music includes elements of old music.
