In scripture God always seals up a woman’s womb, but men never seem to have a low sperm count?
From my understanding of Scripture, it’s interesting to see how God uses the imagery of a woman’s womb being closed, which emphasizes His sovereign control over life and fertility. For example, in Genesis 16:2, we see Sarah’s womb closed, and it’s a reminder that God’s timing is perfect.
On the other hand, while the Bible does mention issues of infertility and barrenness among women, it rarely addresses men’s fertility issues directly, which might reflect the cultural context where women’s cycles were often more visible and impactful on family lineage.
I believe the focus is more about God’s purpose in each situation than on the biological factors of men and women. Each story of barrenness, whether male or female, points to a deeper reliance on faith and trust in God’s plans, as exemplified by the eventual births of Isaac and Samuel after what seemed like impossible circumstances.
It reflects the ancient mysogeny that was inherent to the times scripture was written, and the lack of medical knowledge at that time. Humans did not understand for centuries that male infertility was a real problem, and not women being punished by God.
A female who could not bare children unless God intervened was worthless I that culture. The social responsibility to bare children was tremendous .
A man whose reproductive organs were destroyed in a fight was reduced in society due to his lack of reproductive power, but it was never seen as an act of God. Thus the harsh punishment for injuring a man in that way
Don’t forget the ancient cosmology, which still haunts many believers today. (Just a goofy fact, but Origen, living 200 years after Jesus, went through a careful analysis and concluded that, yes, the stars and planets are living beings. Now we’re pretty sure they aren’t.)
Did you ever think about the fact that maybe they did know about male infertility way back then, and that maybe God chose to record only the instances when He Himself shut a woman’s womb to show His glory and power?
