Is Scripture always the remedy for depression, anxiety, and other mental health struggles—or are we sometimes oversimplifying what it means to walk by faith?

Some believers say turning to the Bible should be the first and only response to emotional distress. Others have experienced seasons where prayer and Scripture were powerful but also needed to be paired with therapy, medication, or medical insight.

Faith doesn’t deny the pain—it invites God into it.

I can relate to this topic. I dealt with different depths of depression for 10+ years. Ultimately coming to Christ and reading my Bible was the turning point. But I would not have been able to cope with anything those years before Christ without mental health professionals and medications. But even after coming to Christ I had at least one Christian who thought that faith was all I needed to not be depressed. That was the pastor who led me to Christ. He had a word for depression: mullygrubs :laughing:. He told me that there is no reason a Christian would have to be depressed. Though he, his family and the church as a whole knew how to love like Jesus does, the pastor’s lack of understanding for my condition made it necessary for me to look to a counselor. I loved and still love my ‘family’ [ before them I had never felt loved) of that church. Since the church had pretty small congregation I felt uncomfortable talking with anyone else because of the pastor’s outlook on depression. I first noticed that I was being changed in late 1999. I moved in mid 2000. I continued with intermittent counseling until the counselor I had been seeing for 8 years discharged me in 2019. Since then God, His Word and medication have kept me looking up instead of down. I have not enjoyed the human love and Biblical teaching that I received during the past 25 years that I did during the 5 years where I came to my Lord. I have lived in small rural towns where there are few churches. Sorry for the lengthy response.

Wisdom is sound thinking, reasoning. And the Holy Spirit is the embodyment of Wisdom, Peace, and Love.

If in Wisdom we have learned how to treat mental or physical illness medically, then it does not go against God to use what we know to treat the issue.

Going against Wisdom comes with a cost. It may not be a sin to be ignorant, but it will not increase your days.

We live in a day and age where people believe they are wiser than the Wisdom we have learned. Many of you pride yourselves on what you think you know.

Wiser than medical schools.
Wiser than scientific studies.
Wiser than theologians.
Wiser than teachers, doctors, therapists.

We live in an age of lies and fantasies.

Just last night I saw an artical that discussed how Robert Kennedy took hia grandkid swimming in waters filled with pathogens. Because he knows better than all the professionals who warned him. Within the last few months, children have become seriously ill and died becauae their parents knew with all their wise hearts that vaccines would do more harm.

You are offered two paths forward. One is wise, the other is not. One path will save you, the other will destroy you. Pray for Wisdom. This path divides.

Question.
Do Christians rely only on faith for healing from heart attacks, cancer, broken bones etc or do they use doctors, medicine and other treatments?

Would somebody please explain what the difference is between a physical illness and mental illness?

Here i a challenge for those brave enough to take it.
Talk to the mothers in your church about ’ post natal depression ’ and find out just how many ladies in your church have or are suffering from this mental illness.
How are you going to help support them?

The point i’m making is mental illness is as common as heart disease and should be seen as an illness, not due to sin or a lack of faith. That post natal depression is a hidden illness in churches is a significant sign of a lack of Love for sick sisters, just as saying mental illness is due to some other cause is equally hateful, yes hateful.
If you are not supporting a brother od sister in their ilness how are you loving them?

I’m 66 years old by the grace of God and with Holy Spirit’s divine help and supernatural work in me along with the powerful Word of God has kept me through hardships,disappointments,being divoiced twice, children all grown now,but we were separated when they were in their early teens, lost of everything,homeless, jobless, and started over 3 times, aches and pains because of gallstones, had surgery for removal,given a pain medication that almost took me out of here over 30 years ago, both parents deceased,three siblings deceased. BUT GOD has been my STAY: Moved into my apartment in November 11,2011, went back to school-obtained Associated Degree in General Business, God open the door for me through AARP SCSEP(Senior Community Service Employment Program) at a Non-Profit Organization, I was hire in Part Time in 2019 and was blessed with full time a year later, Praising GOD THROUGH it ALL. Still working full time, now 6 years, praising God for doing the impossible.

Now through all of that by grace and faith, I stayed close to the Father, by praying, praising God with thanksgiving sometimes through some tears, but with His help TRUSTING & OBEYING HIM and LOVING HIM WITH MY WHOLE HEART, FIRST BY RECEIVING HIS LOVE FOR AND TO ME. REMEMBERING WHAT JESUS DID FOR ME (ISA.53:1-5). ALSO WITH HIS REVELATION TO FORGIVE WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT IN HAVING A STABLE MIND, AS WELL.

i personally believe that we have advanced in our medical understanding because of God. Healing is not a work of the devil.

It is like that story about the man who ends up stuck on a roof during a flood. A boat and a helicoptor come by, and people offer to save him, but he turns them down because he is waiting for God. When he dies, he is very upset and asks God, why didn’t you save me? And God replies, I sent you a boat and a helicoptor. Why didn’t you get on?

People get stuck on thinking God will only move in big flashy ways. But miracles can be extremely subtle. A conversation at the right time, a nudge to call someone, being given a Bible from the friend of a friend you just met, a radio that turns to static at just the right time and saves your life in the process.

A succesful man who pulls into a truckstop and buys a lottery ticket, wins a hundred dollars from a ten dollar ticket, and as he is leaving he sees another man sleeping in his car which is packed full of clothes, belongings. He is moved to hand over the lottery ticket, despite the guy’s protests that he is not that bad off, that he still has a job, but still insists that the homeless guy take the ticket and says he himself had once been homeless and knows what it is like to have nothing… and tells him it will get better. It will be okay.

God weaves the story of our lives together, and all lives in some way intersect. Directly or indirectly. We are called to love one other, and with that, heal each other. God gives us tools, instruments, grows in us knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. A scientific discovery, a creative notion, followed by 20 more which produces antibiotics, x-ray machines, meds that balance the chemicals in the brain that have been thrown off because of sickness, injury, or genetics. Most recently, a way has been discovered to regrow teeth in the mouth so no one needs to use dentures tor the rest of their lives.

He takes each one of us down this path or that, and then uses our experiences to care for countless others as we become useful to do greater good and touch more and more lives, who go on to touch even more lives. To the Glory of God.

God takes all of that and says, Do good. Bare fruit. Multiply. Love one another.

Scripture may inform us of our duty to one another. But it does not perform that duty for us. We cannot excuse our lack of involvement in helping others by saying it is God’s responsibility alone, or that God will do it if it is His Will. His Will is that you tend to the garden that you were placed in.

Now with all that said, I do believe that what we feed ourselves affects our mental health. Scripture does say,

Phillipians 4:8
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

In my own life, I have learned that filling my mind with hateful things creates one version of me. Filling imy mind with loving things creates another. Two very different versions of me, two different ways to see the world, two very different ways to engage with it.

Your choice of focus affects you and your mental health. I have only grown happier and healthier mentally by readjusting how I think and look at the world. Thinking the worst all the time is poisonous.

Wiith that said, what you watch on television matters. What you listen to on the radio matters.

What is the spirit of that news program that you are watching on loop through out the day?

What is the spirit of those words being spoken into your ears? What message is being built up in your mind. Who are they turning you into?

Does it encourage you or inspire peace within you? Is it healing? Does it motivate you to be kind? To serve God? To serve your fellow man? To do good? Does it honestly speak the Truth? Would Christ say that to you?

Or is it divisive? Self serving? Does it rile you up to fight? Does it tell you that you are a victim and that others are out to get you? Does it encourage violence or mistreatment of others? Does it condemn people for their sins while faning complete innocence? Does it bare false witness? Is it manipulate you?

Are you listening on repeat? And if so, do you remember who you were? Do you know what you have become?

Let The Holy Spirit guide you home, back to God. Let the Holy Spirit Transform your life. It doesn’t have to be this way.

If you dwell on darkness, it will also dwell inside you. But if you let the light in, it will give you clarity. The Spirit you give your life to will have power over you. Let the right one in.

Coming back to this topic. Is Scripture alone sufficient for healing mental illnesses?

That is the question, but what is meant by it?
Well there are those so overwhelmed by depression that they cannot get out of bed, nothing, literally nothing is worth doing. What scripture would you suggestion?
Because it takes strong medication to work through a mind so down.
Then there is the person who is hearing voices. Again they hear voces, frequently, sometimes constantly telling them to do some act or that this person is evil etc etc etc. What scripture would you read out to them?

None of the mental illnesses you might come across are the result of demon possession. Ho can I say that, simple because medication will help these suffers, if what they had was purely demonic then it would have no effect.

Mental illness is very common, even in Christian churches, so ask how you can help them in your church.

Scripture doesn’t heal. It’s the Lord who heals. Scripture helps us to get to know the Lord.

No one has been brave enough to ask the ladies about post natal depression.
That shows a lack of both understanding of mental illness and of femail mental health.

Yes this is true God’s Word helps us to know HIM with revelations from Holy Spirit. Yes, Jesus is the Healer,but HIS Word has healing power in it. Remember the Centurion (Matthew 8:8) Jesus marveled at his FAITH, because he knew the power of Jesus Words, thus the centurion said, “But Speak the Word Only,and my servant shall be healed” and the Word Jesus spoke to the centurion was “Go your way and as you have believed it’s already done”.

Remember in Psalm 107:20 He sent His Word to heal them and deliver them from destructions.
Remember in Hebrews 4:12 For the Word of God is quick and powerful…
Remember in 3 John 1:2 Beloved I pray above all things that you may prosper be in good health, even as your SOUL (will,mind,emotions) prospers.
The Word of God has healing in it, remember in Revelation one of Jesus name is the WORD.

God Almighty is a divine KEEPER, and I can witness to that because HE has Kept me all these years and HE loves me unconditionally. HE looks on our hearts daily, but people look on the outward appearance.1 Samuel 16:7.
