First Week of Advent - The Hope of the Messiah

There seems to be a renewed interest in celebrating Advent in recent years. Do you celebrate this time of waiting leading up to Christmas?

If you do, how do you mark this time?

I find the lighting of the Advent candles on the Advent wreath really meaningful with their symbolism. My family and I like to light the candle(s) each evening during dinnertime.

The first candle and week of Advent symbolizes hope. The candle is also called the prophet’s candle and speaks to the Old Testament prophets many hopeful prophecies about the coming Messiah who would restore all things and bring salvation to his people.

Rest in that hope this week, friends!

I really appreciate this reminder. Advent has become more meaningful to me in recent years as well. There’s something about intentionally slowing down and focusing on hope that feels especially grounding this time of year.

I don’t have elaborate traditions, but I do like to take a few quiet minutes in the evening to reflect on one of the prophecies about the coming Messiah. It helps me shift from the busyness of the season to actually remembering what we’re waiting for.

The symbolism of the first candle, hope, is so encouraging. It’s a beautiful picture of God keeping His promises across generations.
