Prov. 3:5-6. The second phrase of verse 5 follows from the first phrase. Wisdom is also manifested in a person’s recognition of the smallness and insufficiency of their own understanding compared to the wisdom and omniscience of the Lord, the scales of which remain beyond human comprehension (Isa. 55:8-9; Rom. 11:33-34). However, people have repeatedly confirmed through their own experience that they can fully trust the Lord, even though He remains incomprehensible to them in many ways.

To know in verse 6 implies not just a simple acknowledgment of the fact that God exists, but knowing Him as One who is close to every person who opens their heart to Him, who, though invisible, is always near such a person (“participating” in all aspects of their life – In all your ways acknowledge Him). The self-reliant (those who depend on their own understanding) distance themselves from God; however, He is close to the humble. Solomon calls his son to humility in verse 5, promising him that in return the Lord will direct his paths (verse 6). This means more than guidance; it also implies the removal of excessive obstacles, assistance in achieving goals, and the alleviation of life as such (compare 3:10, 16, 24-25).
