“When a mocker is punished, the simple gain wisdom; by paying attention to the wise they get knowledge.” – Proverbs 21:11
This verse reminds us of the importance of learning both from the consequences others face and from the wisdom of those around us. By observing how situations unfold, we can grow in understanding and knowledge without always having to experience things ourselves.
In what ways have you gained wisdom by observing the lives or choices of others? How can we better pay attention to the wisdom shared by the wise?

Gaining wisdom by observing others is a powerful principle rooted in Scripture. Proverbs 19:20 reminds us, “Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom in the future.”
I learned this firsthand when I watched a close friend rush into a financial investment without prayer or research. Witnessing the stress it caused him taught me the value of seeking counsel and praying before making significant decisions; something I now prioritize in my own life.
Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” I’ve benefited from conversations with mentors who shared their trials and triumphs. One mentor talked about the importance of integrity in the workplace, and I took those lessons to heart during a tough decision at my job. Their experiences helped me act with integrity and stand strong in my values.
I believe observing the choices of others, we not only grow in understanding but also align ourselves closer to God’s will, ultimately reflecting His wisdom in our lives.
Gain wisdom by observing others is recommendable.
The problem is, who are you observing and what wisdom do you want to add to your Christian life?
Moreover, you have more than enough in the Word of God to observe.
