How Do You Observe Holy Week?

Here we are in Holy Week, friends. How are you marking this special time of year as a believer in Jesus?

Yesterday was Palm Sunday and I attended church with my husband and young boys. I love that our church uses real palm branches and that we physically take part in a procession into church waving the palms and quoting Scripture. It helps me (and my kids) truly think about the events of Holy Week and their significance.

I plan on taking my oldest to the Good Friday service for his first time as well. Our church also has a Maundy Thursday feet-washing service which I have never attended, but would like to.

Growing up, on Good Friday we always colored eggs and drew crosses and lilies on them and wrote “He is risen!” and then we made “tomb cookies” and challah bread on Holy Saturday.

How do you and your church observe Holy Week, including:

  • Spy Wednesday
  • Maundy Thursday
  • Good Friday
  • Holy Saturday

Growing up Nazarene, we did not celebrate Holy Week.

We celebrated Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Easter. Didn’t even know it was referred to as Holy Week until I became an adult.

That’s so interesting. Some of the days of Holy Week (especially Spy Wednesday) are newer to me as well.

Through a mirror darkly just like everyone else.
