Inappropriate Commercials during MLB Playoffs

This article talks about the backlash against sexually provocative ads during the MLB playoffs this year, especially as a drawback to kids watching the games.

As a diehard baseball fan who’s watched every game my team has played in the playoffs this year, I’ve definitely seen these ads more than once. The games have mostly been too late in the evening for my kids to watch anyway, but honestly, as a female baseball fan, I’ve also found them inappropriate and disappointing.

These kind of ads that objectify women feed into the narrative of sports being only a thing guys watch and that guys who watch sports are the kind of men who watch porn. It’s insulting as a woman who has followed sports my whole life. I just want to enjoy a baseball game with my husband who is also a sports fan (and who doesn’t watch porn). :person_facepalming:

What are your thoughts?

And as a sidenote, the scary movie trailers are also frustrating. I have had to cover my kids’ eyes during those, especially since they’re more attention-grabbing for little kids.

The purpose of advertising is to convince you to buy their product. If they can get people’s attention and associate something stimulating with their product, it will result in more money for them. Since these people only think in terms of what they can get, the idea that their imagery might be harmful is of little concern. If they were to see a potential for backlash and decreased sales, they might reconsider. However, since there is no backlash, it is as if the people have voted it to be OK.

That’s definitely true. I certainly get that money is the bottom line with ads like this. I do think there’s been a good bit of backlash over these commercials, so maybe something will change?
