Is “Feel-Good” Spirituality More Dangerous Than Atheism?
This discussion explores whether the rise of vague, feel-good spirituality is more spiritually dangerous than atheism. Participants are invited to reflect on the growing cultural shift away from biblical Christianity toward a personalized faith that avoids commitment and truth.
In today’s culture, spirituality is often embraced as a positive thing—but only when it’s personalized, non-committal, and makes people feel good. More and more people are turning to vague spiritual ideas that avoid absolute truth, biblical authority, or the hard edges of repentance and surrender to Christ. It’s a feel-good faith centered on self, not God.
A recent article from Breakpoint raises a challenging point: Could this kind of spirituality actually be more dangerous than atheism? At least atheism acknowledges a worldview without God, while “feel-good” faith often masquerades as Christian while denying its substance.
What do you think? Have you seen this type of spirituality in your circles, and do you think it’s more spiritually harmful than outright unbelief?

People don’t take this attitude with medicine or with the law, so why do people cherry pick what they will or will not believe.
Part of the problem are pastors, churches that only preach a 'come to Jesus and have faith ’ christianity.
This is something that is not found in the bible.
Paul taught that we should give a Reason for our hope. Luke reported that he carefully investigated what he wrote, and through the bib.e there are statements about monuments, practices the record historical events.
Just two web sites that every church should publicise:-
Answers in genesis, ( you don’t have to be yec, but they are committed to the accuracy, reliability and authority of the bible, with many articles supporting this. )
And coldcasechristianity, particularly the emphasis on Training as apposed to teaching Christians.
Two basic questions to ask. Whatdo you believe about …?
And What evidence do you have for that believe?
Are we talking about having a focus on the Command to Love, like Jesus taught?
Are we talking about breaking free from the shackles of hell and damnation, which Jesus offered the world?
Are we talking about not living in contention with our neighbor and their religion? Love your neighbor as you love yourself?
Are we talking about a focus on feeling better in general, or having a mystical experience, or a God experience, or the experience of the Holy Spirit? Which Christ said would come.
Are we talking about having the freedom to question religious authority and what it teaches, like what Jesus did?
With that said…
If it is a choice between Atheism or Feel Good, I would always choose Jesus over Barabbas.
You’ve asked a good question.
I understand ’ feel good spirituality ’ to be where a message of God loves you and wants the best for you is All that is preach.
Where there is no teaching on the need for self discipline, of avoiding/resisting temptation, and of the need to know what one believes and why…
Yes God wants what is best for us, but that is not automatically what we want.
The best thing in life for everyone is to be in a secure relationship with God/Jesus, not a nice house, a fast car, lovely spouse and 2.5 kids.
Reality check Romans 8: 28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who] have been called according to his purpose.
All things can mean poverty or comfortable living or real difficulties. Do we trust God only when life is good?.
Hi,
If being made free by Jesus doesn’t make you happy, you need to get medical attention. Something is broke.
I’m not talking about the conceited “I am better than everyone else” kind of happy. I’m taking about the happiness that comes from the joy in your heart because you are His.
Law is based in facts. What can you prove?
Medicine is based in science. It is also what can you prove.
Christianity is based in faith. We cannot prove all of it. Historically, Jesus died on the cross. But how do I prove that Jesus ’ death cleansed me from all unrighteousness when I received Him?
1 Peter 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:
Peter wrote this, not Paid.
“Part of the problem are pastors, churches that only preach a 'come to Jesus and have faith ’ christianity.”
Quote from Who-me
Jesus said those words almost exactly Who-me
Matthew 11:28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
