Ezekiel 38–39 outlines a mysterious and sobering prophecy about a coalition led by “Gog of the land of Magog” that will one day rise up against Israel. For centuries, scholars have debated whether Gog and Magog represent literal nations, symbolic powers, or a prophetic pattern that plays out multiple times in history. But recent headlines have sparked renewed interest.

A CNBC article reported that Iran, having assisted Russia militarily during its campaign in Ukraine, is now hoping to “call in the favor.” Analysts say this emerging alliance between Tehran and Moscow—two nations commonly linked with Magog and Persia in Bible prophecy—could be setting the stage for something bigger than just regional posturing.

Meanwhile, Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, rising global instability, and a new wave of military agreements have many wondering: Is Ezekiel’s vision starting to take shape right in front of us?

The Crosswalk article explores biblical interpretations of Gog and Magog, including views that connect them to Russia, Iran, and a future northern confederacy that invades Israel. It also points out the symbolic meaning of these names and how Revelation 20 places a Gog and Magog event after the Millennial Reign—fueling even more debate.

“The identification of Gog and Magog varies, but their opposition to God’s people is consistent. Are we seeing shadows of this today?”

:busts_in_silhouette: What do you think?

  • Do Russia and Iran’s alliance signal anything prophetically significant?
  • Are Gog and Magog literal modern nations—or a broader spiritual archetype?

I believe the article is right @Fritzpw_Admin.

Gog is not Russia. That is interpreting the Bible through American lens. Gog is king of Meschech, which is in Turkey. People say it’s Russia because it sounds like Moscow.

Even if it was, do you want salvation for the Russians and Iranians or do you want them to die without Christ?

I think prophecy discussions can become difficult when people become more focused on identifying enemies and geopolitical “players” than on praying for people and remembering that Christians are still called to desire repentance, salvation, and mercy for all nations.

Personally, I try to hold prophecy interpretations with some humility because Christians have interpreted current events through Revelation and Ezekiel for many generations already, often with great certainty, and history turned out more complicated than expected.

That does not mean prophecy is meaningless. But I do think Jesus consistently emphasized being spiritually awake, faithful, loving, and prepared rather than trying to predict every headline exactly.

And I agree with @Josiah that, regardless of how someone interprets Gog and Magog, Christians should still desire salvation, mercy, and repentance for all people, including those in nations we fear or oppose politically.

The links between those radical Islamic nations listed in Ezekiel 38 and the Communists in Russia has been going on a long time now. The word “chief” in Ezekiel 38:2 is the word Ro’sh, and points to the area of Russia, and the Meshech and Tubal in the Septuagint points to Moschi and Tiberni, areas around the Caucasus mountains (like Georgia and Russia).

What really confirms that Russia is involved is how they have helped the main supporters of radical Islam. Even though there are many Christians in today’s Russia, and past history, it is the atheistic Communist controllers that represent the supporters of radical Islam against Israel.

Persia = Iran, Iraq, and possible Syria, which Russia has a naval base there and advisors.

Ethiopia = in Ezekiel’s day, the lands of Ethiopia included all the lands below Egypt, which some of those southern areas today are aligned with radical Islam.

Libya = today’s African country Libya. During President Reagan’s administration sent U.S. bombers in to bomb the Libyan terrorist camps supported then by Russia.

Gomer = old Soviet satellites, like Ukraine, Georgia, etc.

Togarmah = old region of Cappadocia, which is now Turkey, an Islamic nation.

What upsets me that as someone who cares about people from those countries, it makes me upset to think about how they are doomed. I guess it’s easier for an “America First” Christian fundamentalist who sees them as unreedemable, unlike me

That’s not at all the story. Christians in Russia will be gathered by Christ Jesus as well as those in other countries to not suffer what is coming upon the Communists there with the battle of Armageddon. Also, per Zech.14, there will be leftovers of that great northern army that will come up against Israel and they will still exist after Christ’s return, and will go up to Jerusalem and worship Him from year to year, and keep the Feast of Tabernacles.

Hi Fritz,

I do believe that the Russian Federation plus Iran and others could be brought down to the Golan heights, (no walls) as early as next year. Russia is wanting to end the war with Ukraine. Also Russia has sent a ship to resupply its aerodrome in Syria. There are hundreds of Russians in Syria, so perhaps the focus is changing.

PEACE AND SAFETY.

Many people across the internet are asking about this Peace deal with Iran, `Is this the `Peace and Safety` of 1 Thess. 5: 1 – 3.

`But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. For you know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night .

For when they say, “Peace and Safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labour pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.` (1 Thess. 5: 1 – 3)

What does the Lord by His Holy Spirit through Paul tell us.

`But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this day should overtake you as a thief. You are all sons of light and of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. Therefore, let us not sleep, as others do, let us watch and be sober.` (1 Thess. 5: 4 – 6)

And ag ain –

`…exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.` (Heb. 10: 25)

So we ask, `What exactly from scripture is the Day of th e Lord?

First it is important to note that the word `Day` in Hebrew and Greek mean 2 things

1) a period of time

2) a specific time.

Most people think of the Day of the Lord as the specific day when the Lord comes in great power and glory with His angelic army to bring vengeance upon the rebellious and delivers those in Israel. And that is true from God`s word. (Zech. 14: 3 Rev. 6: 1 2 – 1 7)

But many people do not realise that the Day of the Lord is also a period of time. (Zeph. 1: 14 – 16 Joel 2: 1 – 11)

God`s word says that we shall SEE the Day approaching. (Heb. 10: 25) So what exactly will we SEE? There has been lots of speculation for years concerning this. But God does not leave us to speculation. God is very specific.

`Blow the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the Day of the Lord is coming, for it is at hand: a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness ,

like the morning clouds spread over the mountains, a people come, great and strong, the like of whom has never been; nor will there ever be any such after them, even for many successive generation. ` (Joel 2: 1 & 2)

That is a massive army, the like of which has never been or will be again, God says. So, where do they come from and where do they go?

`I will remove far from you the northern army, and drive him away into a barren and desolate land, with his face towards the Eastern sea and his back toward the Western sea; his stench will come up, and his foul odour will rise, because he has done monstrous things.` (Joel 2L 20)

The Prophet Ezekiel also speaks of this great northern army.

`you will come from your place out of the far north, you and many people with you…You will come up against my people Israel like a cloud, to cover the land. It will be in the latter days that I will bring you against my land, so that the nations may know me, when I am hallowed in you, O Gog, (northern army) before their eyes.` (Ez. 38: 15 & 16)

This great army, monstrous army will not be hard to see coming down from the north to Israel. When it reaches Israel then that is the start of the Day of the Lord (period of time). (Joel 2: 1 & 2)

And as Jesus, the Head of the Body, tells us, we are not in that Day. (1 Thess. 5: 5) That is our lift off time t o gl ory.

So, this peace deal going on at the moment in the Middle East is NOT the start of the Day of the Lord (period of time). There is no great army coming down from the far north…yet.

After God deals with that great northern army, then the world will say `Peace and Safety,` as the Peace treaty with Israel is signed.

`Then he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week…` (Dan . 9; 27)

No.

For-profit “teachers” have been fleecing the sheep for 150 years by crying Antichrist!

And gullible saints keep falling for the alarmists. A future we can do nothing to change is one that requires nothing of us in the present.
