Is VBS Worth It for Your Kids?

For many families, VBS is a nostalgic part of summer—crafts, snacks, catchy songs, and cardboard sets retelling Bible stories. But in a busy world where time is precious and parents weigh every commitment, a question surfaces: is Vacation Bible School actually worth it for your kids?

Some argue it’s just “Christian childcare.” Others say it’s the first place their child felt God’s love. For many churches, it’s a major outreach tool that introduces unchurched families to the gospel in a low-pressure environment. But how lasting is the impact?

Scripture reminds us, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6). VBS might be just one week—but it could plant seeds that last a lifetime.

Do you think VBS is still relevant and effective today?
What memories—good or bad—do you have from your own VBS experience?

“A single verse learned, a single friend made, a single spark lit—it’s not just a week of games. It could be a week of grace.”

Learn more about the heart behind Vacation Bible School:

Kids learn through play. VBS is exactly that! And, the best thing about VBS is that it’s usually free (at least, I’ve never heard of one that cost money to attend). That usually prompts more neighborhood families to attend, and that makes WAY more kids learning the word of God through fun, games, and crafts…many, maybe hearing Bible stories and such for the first time ever.

I always thought VBS was primarily a clandestine ministry to harried parents. It is usually parents who come up with the idea, parents who promote it, parents who corral the unsuspecting youth group, and bored superannuated old-folks to staff it, and parents who will fork out untold cash to underwrite it. Ever wonder why? Sweet bliss of a quiet house for a few hours. I think if the kids came home and said “Mommie, we got to handle poisonous snakes at VBS” Mom would say “That’s nice. I hope you get to do more fun stuff tomorrow”
