Do children really need to lift weights or use exercise equipment? Is it safe? Is playing outside and riding bikes and skateboards not enough?
I think there should be some cautions about it. I’m not familiar enough about it but I do think there are some risks and dangers.

Working out is good. There are influences of many kind. God delights in taking care of our temple. With guidance and instruction if the kids like or love to workout then why not, hoping the equipment is not strenuous.
Children need exercise. If they choose to do weightlifting (like their parents) then it needs to be done correctly, and yes it can be safe. However, there isn’t a need for a 8 year old to be squatting 150 pounds obviously.
And same for the exercise equipment. Don’t just let them do it, make sure they know HOW
Yet, for some kids, playing outside and doing all that is enough.
