God created the heavens and the earth, forming man from dust and breathing the breath of life into him. Just as fish were created to thrive in the sea, we were created to thrive in God’s presence. If fish are taken out of water, they die. Similarly, if we’re separated from God, we’ll perish.

This truth is evident in creation. When a person dies and is buried, their flesh returns to dust, leaving only bones behind. This reminds us of God’s words in Genesis 3:19, 'For dust you are and to dust you will return.

I’ve always liked this verse because I hear God’s compassion for us in the words.

As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him;
** **for he knows how we are formed,
he remembers that we are dust. Psalm 103:13-14
