Paid under the table

Hello Can Christian accept work paid in cash, without paying taxes

Well, when Jesus was asked about paying taxes, He said this.

"And they sent to him some of the Pharisees and some of the Herodians, to trap him in his talk. And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are true and do not care about anyone’s opinion. For you are not swayed by appearances,c but truly teach the way of God. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?”

But, knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why put me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Jesus said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they marveled at him."

As a child of God, we are encouraged to obey God and the common laws of man, as long as they do not contradict God. May I ask what the work is?
Peter

My friend is retired - she looks after a 90 year old man for a couple of hours every week and the family pay her cash

Oh, I think this is completely fine, I believe the IRS has a certain limit as to the amount per year before reporting in nessarry. However, I do not think this would officially qualify as a taxable Job. Unless W2s and such were filled out, I see this more as a “Good Samaritan”, Good Neighbor thing.

If the Church were to do this, it would not need to report it. Your friend is not working at a mini mart or office job or something like that, where they do not want to pay taxes, but rather more like babysitting. Not calling the 90-year-old man a baby, but in the same genre.

Just my honest opinion.
Peter

I would absolutely say this is fine.
Of course…I think taxes are a scam.

Your heart is in the right place about this. You want to do the right thing, even if it costs you. That’s a very good posture but I’ll take a wild guess that you do need the money.

I can’t be 100% sure if keeping it for your family’s needs because I am not God, but perhaps you should pray about it and ask God if is it ok if you keep that money for your family. Then turn towards your spirit inside of you and…is your spirit at peace, or is your spirit troubled? Scripture says you will know by that. I don’t see any way to mess that up by taking it to the Lord and asking Him. I would keep it and praise God for His blessing of side work for me and the fam. You’re Blessed Brother!

That sounds completely fine to me. We do the same thing when we pay babysitters to watch our kids for a couple hours.

If God is convicting her, and not someone else convicting her, than she should listen to the conviction.
I never really thought about it, but sometimes I’ll look after a dog while the owners go on vacation. They pay me and I’ve never claimed that payment. It didn’t even occur to me to do so. Still doesn’t.
However, I worked for a while part time cleaning private homes. They paid me cash too. This I did claim even though it wasn’t a lot of money. It just seemed to me the right thing.

Would you mind if I asked you, what does your conscience say to you about this?

I am asking this on behalf of my friend who works part time on and off - if I was in the same situation I would not do it - thanks

Oh I see. Well keep it in mind to ask her what her conscience says about it.
