I would sooner the adults understand the need. It is a sad fact that such checks would be necessary, but as they say, But here we are…
Our church, FaithChurch, Anderson Indiana, requires record checks, criminal background check, frankly everything a non-government organization can request.
Before service, parents would bring their child to the check in desk, a picture is taken of the parents with the child. After service, the parent in the photo must pick up the child, they will not release them to anyone else. The Sunday School area of the building is even set up so that all doors leading into it are locked (with fire exit alarms) so the ONLY way out is through the drop off entrance, which has someone waiting there the whole time classes are in session.
The reason for the policy is simple. If there aren’t adequate safeguards to protect children from predators and a child is traumatized by one, insurance companies will not pay, the organization will be left with a hefty bill for trauma care and possible law suits. In other words, the safeguards protect the organization and its children.
Ours is a smaller, family church, and my husband are on the teaching rotation. There is very little done to protect children. We come from a larger church with background checks, security cameras, check-ins, etc, so it’s a very different environment here. Right now our biggest battle is to get the parents to come pick up their kids after church. They are used to having all the kids dismissed and the kids just run and find their parents. My husband and I don’t ever want to be in the position of having been the last to have seen a child. Until those parents come get their kids and we make a successful handoff, those kids are staying with us, no matter how annoyed the parents get.
