Reformation Day on October 31 remembers when Martin Luther’s writings in 1517 helped spark a movement to reform the church, with an emphasis on grace, Scripture, and faith in Christ. Many Protestant churches note it on Oct 31 or the Sunday before (“Reformation Sunday”).
How do you mark the day, personally or in your church?
-
Do you highlight any themes (grace alone, Scripture’s authority, faith in Christ)?
-
Any favorite hymns or Scriptures tied to the Reformation?
-
If you have kids/teens, how do you explain it simply?
-
If your church doesn’t observe it, what do you focus on this time of year instead?
Would love to hear how different traditions in our community approach it.
As an Orthodox Christian, I do not observe Reformation Day, but I recognize it as a moment in history when God raised people to call the Church back to aspects of the Gospel, even if in a fragmented way. For me, it is a chance to reflect on God’s grace, the faithfulness of Christ, and the authority of His Word, as preserved and lived in the Church through the sacraments and apostolic Tradition.
I really like this list of ways to celebrate Reformation Day. Some of them also serve as alternatives to Halloween celebrations since the two observances are on the same day.
