From house churches to megachurches, from hymns to contemporary praise bands, the way Christians gather and worship today looks very different than it did in the days of Jesus and the early Church. But should it?

In John 4, Jesus said true worshipers will worship “in spirit and in truth,” not tied to a temple or mountain. That seems to free us from rigid worship structures. And yet, today’s Church often resembles a production—complete with lights, stage teams, and branding strategies. While innovation isn’t inherently bad, it raises an important question: Are we following Jesus’ model—or drifting from it?

This article explores how Jesus called people to humility, authenticity, and spiritual transformation—not entertainment or personal preference. It also challenges us to reconsider how much of our modern worship is rooted in biblical practice versus cultural habit.

Yes, the church is the “pillar and ground of the truth,” but the form of the worship service is not prescribed in Scripture. When I attend churches, I try to ignore the contemporary or traditional forms and only concentrate on the content of the songs and preaching as to whether they are in accordance with the truth of the Bible. Then, I can be edified no matter what forms they take.
