The Body, the Soul and the Spirit

The Soul: The Soul is the spiritual part of the body. It is the part of the body that gives the body life, the “Turbine” if you will. Then the Lord God formed the man out of the dust from the ground and breathed the breath of life into his nostrils, and the man became a living SOUL.

Prior to God breathing “life into our nostrils”, while we were a form made of dust from the earth, yet at that stage God called us man, and when God’s Breath entered there was fusion and we “BECAME”, a living Soul. “Bless the Lord oh my soul and all that is within me, bless His holy name”.

Soul is also interpreted as “Being”. We did not get a being, we BECAME a living being.

**Revelation 6:9-10 9 **When the Lamb broke the fifth seal, I saw underneath the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God, and because of the testimony which they had maintained; **10 **and they cried out with a loud voice, saying, “How long, O Lord, holy and true, will You refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?”

This passage shows clearly, that though we die, the Soul remains with the body and does not die with the body. Now here is where we connect with what Jesus says. We “GET” new bodies. Spiritual HOLY bodies at resurrection. Our new bodies will be like Jesus body. He showed it to us in the upper room.

Remember what God told Cain after killing Able, “your brothers blood ‘cries’ out to me from the grave’. When King Saul went to a seer to have the prophet Samuel rise from the dead, Samuel indeed appeared and said, “who is this that awakens me from my slumber”. The soul doesn’t die.

The good news is that Jesus set the captives free. Matthew 27:52,53

**52 **And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

**53 **And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

Now regarding the Spirit. Though Jesus was a living “BIENG - SOUL”, and walked among us, on the cross He said: “Father”, I commend my spirit unto you”. This indicates that the entry into Gods kingdom requires a spiritual body, not one tied to the earth or the grave. God has sealed us with the Holy Spirit, guaranteeing His promise that where He is we shall be also.

In conclusion. We “ARE” a soul, with dust for a body, sealed with the Holy Spirit…our assurance to His promises. That seal makes His promise tangible and achievable and everlasting.

I think this is one of those topics where there are a lot of different ways people try to describe something that’s ultimately hard to fully explain.

The language around body, soul, and spirit can feel a bit complex, but what stands out to me is the bigger picture, that there’s more to us than just the physical, and that our relationship with God goes beyond what we can see.

For me, it’s less about having a perfect definition and more about how that understanding shapes how we live day to day.

Sometimes, if not more often than not, definition matters!

The definition to me and my simple mind is that our body is what God made for us to physically exist on this earth to communicate with others in a physical manner. Our soul is who we really are and how we are connected with God as he also created our individual souls. And the spirit is how God guides us, corrects us, rebukes, protects us, and so much more.

The way I learned it was that, I am a spirit, I have a Soul, I live in a flesh Body.

We know from scripture that the spirit and the soul are connected. So because of that there will some who say, when I die my soul goes to heaven. But technically I believe, my spirit goes back to heaven and my soul goes with it. So interchanging the terms spirit and soul is quite common.

Our Soul consists of 3 parts, the mind, will and emotions. The spirit has 3 parts, the Conscience, Intuition, and the ability to Fellowship with God Him Self. Our flesh body has 5 senses that we know of and perhaps more. So that’s all 3, spirit/soul/body. But I am not done yet! There is something else? Anyone know what it is? Beuller? Anyone?

The other aspect of us is, the Heart. It talks about the heart all through scripture. Guard it, use it, listen to it! Yes the Heart both thinks and speaks if you know what to look for.

The heart consists of all 3 aspects of the soul (spirit/soul/body) and the most important part of the spirit, the Conscience. Now scripture does not say outright what the Heart is, so we have to deduce it all by paying attention to any where scripture mentions the Heart because in that way it tells us how it functions. I don’t have my notes right in front of me, but it says

Proverbs 4:23

**23 **Guard your heart above all else,
for it determines the course of your life…./NLT

That shows our will affecting our heart.

Genesis 20:5

**5 **Said he not unto me, She is my sister? and she, even she herself said, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart and innocency of my hands have I done this…./KJV

In the integrity of his heart, so there’s his Conscience.

Genesis 27:41

**41 **And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob…./KJV

Esau said in his heart, out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. (Matthew 12:34) So the heart both thinks and speaks. It always speaks!

Exodus 4:14

…he will be glad in his heart…./KJV

There’s the Emotions!

So, Mind, Will, Emotions, and Heart makes up a man within the spirit/soul/body.
