Just yesterday, my upstairs neighbor passed away. Some beleive that she died of heatstroke we had a bad heatwave with no central ac which someone was supposed to fix(they did not come). We invited her to come to our apartment downstairs because we have an portable ac unit, but she declined the offer. We even bought a fan for her to have. As of yet I don’t know the cause of her death (she was battling alcholism and was not in the best health). My dad is pinning the blame on me and my mother, saying that we should’ve did more to help like giving her the ac. Admittely, I didn’t feel comfortable about the idea (my mother has Congestive Heart Failure; heat can make it worse if not fatal). We dicussed getting and ac for her apartment, but it was too far out of the budget to afford it. I feel horrible about what happened and now I’m feeling that in some way it is my fault. I believe she knew Christ while she was alive. I prayed that she went to heaven where she can find peace. I feel like i’m responsible, like I indirectly killed her. Can people pray for her to find peace and pray for me to be forgiven if this is the case.
Is it just me, or does this sound really familiar? I do not know why, but I feel I read this before. I will attempt to answer your question, though. No. Of course, you are not to blame. She was battling her own demons, and she succumbed to them. If you tried to offer help and she did not accept it, it is on her. I would not analyze it too much. If it really is bothering you, keep it in the back of your mind, so if a similar situation comes up, perhaps you will go the extra step. But even it you bought her and an AC, she would still have to turn it on.
Peter
You did what was reasonable and more than many people would have done.
Your Father is falsly blaming you for something outside of your control.
May I ask whether he has a history of going out of his way to help people? Because if he hasn’t he is trying to shift his own feeling of guilt for neglecting neighbours onto you.
That is in no way your fault. I am saying a prayer for your neighbor’s family and for yours.
