The Money Lenders

Poor Jesus,

when He turned over the tables of the Jewish money lenders, -

His days where numbered

All wars are bankers wars

Welcome @WhatNext

Not sure what your point is here, but I do agree with this.

“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs.” 1 Timothy 6:10

This is why Jesus said this.

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.” Matthew 6:24

Again, welcome. If you want, let’s talk about it.

Actually he wasn’t reacting against bankers, but against those who turned worship into profitering.

Re read the biblical account.

Am I the only one who noticed that Jesus had to clean out the synagogues? The first demon He cast out was in a synagogue (Mark 1:21). First attempt on His life was from preaching in the synagogue (Luke 4:20).

I’m no Greek translating timeline genius, but between demons, Pharisees, merchants, and bankers, everyone was in God’s temple except God.

For him (GOD) to be there, one or more must gather in HIS name, not in the name of money.

Is it any wonder why you never see a “First Bank of Jesus Christ”?

I worked in the banking industry for years. Most organizations, businesses, corporations are not Christian. They operate by the ways of this world, and banks are no different. Their goal is to make money, to prosper at what they do, and to provide a service. In that sense, they are not different than any other business.

But this is about the temple; a place where the word of God is read. It’s a meeting place for the religious Jews to hear the word of God because many at that time couldn’t read. And being found as a place for worshipping God, it’s held to a different standard than the world’s standard. The Jewish leadership turned it into a place of commerce where pilgrims were cheated in the exchange of money. Jesus had every right to challenge them in this. Today, I think He would leave the banks alone.

The synagogue was first created by Ezekiel when he was carted off to Babylon. The Jews in captivity no longer had their temple so Ezekiel felt the need to create a place for them to gather and keep their faith alive. The main difference between a temple and a synagogue is in the animal offerings. Since the temple was destroyed in 70 AD, there have been no sin offerings.

i dont know that @WhatNext really was trying to say that it was about reacting to the bankers. this post seemed more of a personal thought/sidenote on the story.

I think what stands out to me in that story is less about money itself and more about what the space was meant for.

It seems like the issue wasn’t just that people were doing business, but that something meant for worship and focus got turned into something else.

That part feels pretty relatable even today, how easy it is for things to slowly shift away from their original purpose.
