Thoughts on Viral Video about Choosing to Have Kids

So I’ve seen a clip going viral where a woman is calling it selfish and disappointing to choose to have a baby with the state of the world right now and in this economy. I think choosing to be a parent is the most selfless thing you could do, actually, and as Christians we have a hope that shines through all the sin and brokenness that is always a reality because of the fall. Kids were born during world wars, back when we didn’t have advanced medical care, back before laundry machines and cars and electricity were created. I’m curious other thoughts on this, but it made me really sad to see that being picked on. It feels very nihilistic to say that no one should be having kids because of of everything going on in the world right now. And just added negativity towards women who want to become moms…a very honorable and beautiful and worthy thing to have as a life goal.

Anway, curious everyone else’s thoughts if they’ve seen this video going around!

I agree with the state of the world comment the women made on the clip. It was after world war 2 that we saw such an increase in births with the baby boomer generation. It’s more challenging to have children when the world is on the brink.

I don’t agree with her comment that having a baby is selfish or disappointing. The birth rate in many parts of the world, including USA and Canada is declining. Japan, I think is the worst. As a society we need women to have children in order for our society to survive.

I don’t really have an opinion one way or the other. If a woman refrained from child bearing because of the state of the world, I would understand. And if a woman wanted to have children, I get that too.
