I’ve been trying to build a consistent morning devotional routine, but I keep struggling with staying focused and actually being present. Most mornings, I feel distracted or just mentally checked out while reading. For those of you who have a steady rhythm, what does your morning devotional time actually look like? Do you follow a structure (like prayer → reading → journaling), or keep it more flexible?
Curious if anyone has practical tips for staying mindful and engaged, especially early in the morning when it’s easy to feel tired or distracted by what’s coming up in my day. Are there any reading plans, writing/journaling exercises, or habits that have especially helped you go deeper instead of just “going through the motions”?
I know I could switch times if mornings don’t work well, but I’d really like to try to make mornings work. Would love to hear what’s worked (or not worked) for you.
Sometimes life was moving to fast and my work schedule to much for me to actually sit and read, so I would combine early morning routines such as working out, pets, etc, and listen to Christian music primarily by the group Reflect Love Back, and have a sermon on the playlist aswell (Lacey gives great sermons [shes the singer]). I would do this for about 2 hours and it filled me with peace, for journaling I would write poems or songs myself as I have always found that easier, I guess music just clicks with me, try finding a method that fits you, rather then fitting the method.
If I try to do too much, reading, journaling, long prayers, I end up getting distracted or just going through the motions. But if I focus on just one small thing, like a few verses and a short moment to sit with it, it feels more real.
Also, giving myself permission for it not to be “perfect” every morning has helped. Some days are more focused than others, and that’s okay.
I belong to an online group of friends. The leader posts a few verses of Scripture as we go through one of the Bible’s books and each of us who want to will write what ever comes to mind from those verses. It might be our understanding or something it reminds us of. I start my morning this way and its my devotional time. Taking Scripture this slowly keeps me focused for the day.
