Volunteering/Community Service Ideas with Kids?

This upcoming time of year with the holidays is a great time to jump into serving more in the community, and it’s really something I’d like to prioritize this year with my kids. I know that they will be blessed as they see how we can serve and bless others!

One thing we have loved doing for several years is Operation Christmas Child where you pack a shoebox full of toys and necessities for children in need. It’s always fun and impactful to shop with my kids for toys for other kids and to have them help pick the toys out.

What other opportunities like this are there? What do you do with your family?

Get involved with your church in organising the harvest festival and in helping with the light parties or reformation celebrations instead of Halloween.

Operation Christmas Child is such a beautiful tradition, we’ve done that too, and it really does help shift their focus in the best way.

Another thing we’ve tried is making “blessing bags” together, gallon zip bags filled with socks, snacks, hand warmers, wipes, a small devotional or card. We keep a few in the car to hand out when we see someone in need. It’s simple, but it gives the kids a tangible way to help.

Some food banks also have kid-friendly volunteer shifts this time of year. Sorting canned goods or packing meal kits can be a good way to serve as a family without it being overwhelming.
