Were Mary and Joseph Engaged or Married at the Time of Jesus' Birth?

We likely all know how foundational the virgin birth is to the Christmas Story, but as Mary and Joseph were traveling to Bethlehem, were they still just engaged or were they married at that point?

I never really thought about this question till reading this article: Were Mary and Joseph Engaged or Married When Jesus Was Born?.

It’s so fascinating to think about what must have been going through their minds. Did they have hundreds of questions or were they filled with peace? Perhaps some of both? I wonder what they talked about on the journey to Bethlehem. Were they comfortable with each other or did they feel like strangers? Perhaps the journey to Bethlehem was when they got to know each other and was a blessing in disguise so they could feel connected as they raised the Christ-child together.

The Word Considered…

Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS.
Matthew 1:24-25

Just something to think about.

Fascinating to think that Jesus died for my sins.

@KPuff is certainly correct the two were definately married before the birth of Christ. Although Joseph didn’t consummate the marriage before the birth. I just heard an audio reading of the scripture on IHEARTRADIO “THE BIBLE IN A YEAR”. I felt compelled to add my 2-cents
