What does Jesus mean when He says, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand”? (John 13:7)

This verse has always struck me as an invitation to patience rather than blind acceptance. Jesus isn’t dismissing understanding; He’s postponing it. The implication is that meaning can unfold over time rather than all at once.

In context, the disciples are confused because their expectations don’t match what they’re witnessing. That feels relatable, we often interpret events based on immediate logic, while their significance only becomes clear in hindsight. The statement suggests that lack of clarity in the moment doesn’t equal lack of purpose.

For me, it’s less about suppressing questions and more about allowing time to reveal connections that aren’t visible yet. Understanding isn’t denied; it’s deferred.

I take it like this. It’s all a mystery. And he is a master of mystery! Take it like a stage all peoples present. Like a good book. Now set that book down. Before reading the end. Who do you love. The one with the ending of the book you almost finished. And realize he was the beginning of the book to. Imagine the peace in that.

Joh 13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.
Joh 13:2 And supper being ended, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,
Joh 13:3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God,
Joh 13:4 rose from supper and laid aside His garments, took a towel and girded Himself.
Joh 13:5 After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.
Joh 13:6 Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, “Lord, are You washing my feet?”
Joh 13:7 Jesus answered and said to him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this.”
Joh 13:8 Peter said to Him, “You shall never wash my feet!” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.”
Joh 13:9 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!”
Joh 13:10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.”
Joh 13:11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”
Joh 13:12 So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, "Do you know what I have done to you?
Joh 13:13 You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.
Joh 13:14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.
Joh 13:15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.
Joh 13:16 Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.
Joh 13:17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
Joh 13:18 “I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled, ‘HE WHO EATS BREAD WITH ME HAS LIFTED UP HIS HEEL AGAINST ME.’
Joh 13:19 Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He.
Joh 13:20 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me.”

I think the passage that this verse is found in has two meanings. The first and obvious meaning is in serving one another. Jesus, the teacher has washed their feet and so they as His disciples should wash each others feet. He who wants to be first must be last.

But the other meaning relates to 1 John 1:9. The disciples are clean but walking around in the dusty roads means their feet have become dirty. In order to have any part or fellowship with Jesus, their feet need to be washed. So it is with us. On receiving salvation, we are now clean. But living in this world with all its challenges and temptations means part of us gets dirty. We don’t have to be washed again. That was done, but we do need to have our feet washed in confession so He can purify us of all unrighteousness. Then our fellowship with Him is restored.

I think it correlates with the last passage of the chapter where he explains it. But I think that there was a great deal of depth to the Words of Christ that went beyond surface level. And I think there was more to be taken from His Words that the Disciples were not often able to see when they first heard those Words.

**12 **When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. **14 **Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. **15 **I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. **16 **Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. **17 **Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Christ often spoke of Humility and lifted it up as a quality to be had. Humility was connected with the LOVE He spoke of. And His Teachings often had an equalizer effect- He leveled the playing field so that no one would stone the prostitute. By saying that the first stone must be thrown by someone who was sinless made it so no one could throw a stone but Him. And as an Example of Godly behavior, He throwed no stone. Having the Power to execute Judgement but instead choosing to Forgive- this is God. This is God revealed in Christ. And God’s Heart, which is to save His People, His Children, from sin and Darkness.

Christ, Who was their Master, lowered Himself to serve them- and in this, redefined what it means to have Authority- as an act of service and LOVE. That we treat others who are in a lower position than ourselves as if they are more or greater and lift them up instead of stepping on them or putting them down as the world does. Treating them as children who need room to learn and grow. Who will err and make mistakes but will learn from them their mistakes with time. And good instruction. And good example. By those who LOVE them and serve them. As Family. Brothers, Sisters, Fathers and Mothers. Elders. In LOVING relationship to one another. Without judgement but a desire to see them grow, and to do better, and achieve their best.

Sin separates us from each other. It destroys life, and relationship. But God brings together and makes whole what has become shattered. And as marriage symbolizes, and as being made one symbolizes, God brings together with LOVE that which was fractured and made a multitude, making it one by closing the divide. Making a Way where there is no way that all can stand together as a true family rather than as enemies with unending claims against one another.
