What Does the Bible Mean by “Fear of the Lord”?

The phrase “fear of the Lord” appears throughout Scripture, yet Christians don’t always mean the same thing when they explain it.

Does it mean being afraid of God? Awe and reverence? Respect and obedience? Something more?

How would you explain “fear of the Lord” to someone encountering the phrase for the first time?

When praying for a young lad with Asthma, I felt flames!!! :fire::fire::fire::fire:Up and down my arms. (He was healed) I was afraid of His power expressed.:firecracker:

A simple way to frame it for a newcomer is:

The fear of the Lord isn’t being terrified that God will hurt you; it’s being so deeply amazed by His greatness and love that you take Him completely seriously.

It balances wonder (realizing how great He is) with trust (knowing He is good) and realism (knowing that God is not to be toyed with or taken for granted).

Be blessed.
