What does the Bible mean to give thanks in all things/for everything?

I’ve been pondering what it means in the Christian life to give thanks in all things/give thanks in everything as we read in 1 Thessalonians 5:18. How do you practically apply this in your daily life, especially during difficult or challenging times? Do you think it’s possible to find something to be thankful for in every situation, or is it more about maintaining a grateful attitude regardless of circumstances?

I did find Matthew Henry’s Commentary helpful on this - “We should be thankful in every condition, even in adversity as well as prosperity. It is never so bad with us but it might be worse. If we have ever so much occasion to make our humble complaints to God, we never can have any reason to complain of God, and have always much reason to praise and give thanks: the apostle says, This is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning us, that we give thanks, seeing God is reconciled to us in Christ Jesus; in him, through him, and for his sake, he allows us to rejoice evermore, and appoints us in every thing to give thanks.” but I’m still not sure how we can give thanks in the things that cause so much grief and pain. What do you think?

I think it comes down understanding we worship the God who gives and takes away. We don’t feel grateful for the death of a child, but we are grateful for the people who love us and gather around during the horror, grateful for the support the church, etc.

I have a terminal illness. I am not thankful for it, but I am thankful for good things that have come from it. Restored relationships, chicken pot pies, and rides to doctor appt. AND thankful for life up to this point. Its all good.
