Pastor John MacArthur, one of the most recognizable voices in conservative evangelicalism, has been hospitalized with pneumonia. According to a Grace Community Church update, his health is rapidly declining and his family is preparing for the possibility that he may soon be with the Lord.

MacArthur’s influence spans over 50 years of preaching, Bible teaching, and pastoral leadership. He’s known for his steadfast commitment to expositional preaching, his founding of The Master’s Seminary, and his bold stances on theological clarity—even when controversial. Whether or not you agree with all of his views, there’s no denying the scope of his impact on evangelical thought and pastoral ministry.

How should we process moments like this when a spiritual giant nears the end of his earthly race? What do we take away from a life lived in public ministry—and what lessons carry forward?

“He preached the Word in season and out of season.”

I began following Jesus in 1988, primarily through Christian radio. John MacArthur was one of my “teachers”, and I listened regularly for at least a decade. I received his monthly newsletter (before email). GTY sent me a MacArthur Study Bible, when it was first released -free. It is well worn, and still in my collection of Bibles.

John MacArthur kept it serious - there was no silly stories, joking, etc. something that is lacking in a lot of preaching these days. Just dispensing the Truth, one verse at a time. He set the bar high for radio pastors. Like Charles Stanley, he will be missed.

There was no wavering in him. I feel after Dr. Stanley, he last of the great ones.
He stood on the solid rock. No bells or whistles. The world will be a little dimmer without him.
