Not that long ago, people routinely repaired shoes, appliances, furniture, clothing, watches, and all kinds of household items. Today, many things are inexpensive or difficult to repair, so we simply replace them.
Is there something you think we’ve become too quick to throw away? Or is replacing things simply one of the conveniences of modern life?
Relationships. In marriage, we say in sickness and in health. Another way of phrasing this might be to say, to hold in unconditional love no matter what happens. Real, Biblical, Christ centered love does not throw people away because there is a sin, a flaw, or an error. It does not walk away because we are not being gratified, or because it becomes harder to love that person, or because it is just easier to walk away and start somewhere new.
Love is not easy. It never has been. If it was, it would not force you to grow up as a person and take on some personal responsibility. If it was easy, Christ might have laughed on the cross instead of suffering.
But love endures the cross. It bears the full weight of the suffering and the iniquities of others, and it forgives them when they are gleefully cheering in their sickness and ignorance at your own suffering. Because that is what real love does. It bears the iniquities of others who cannot save themselves. Love endures the pain, the hardship, the suffering, and the struggle for the sake of someone else. And we do this for the Father, for Christ, and for the lost that God has called us to seek out and save.
